« on: November 10, 2004 - 01:53:42 PM »
SO my exhaust and mufflers come in today as planned!!  YEAH!!   tongue  But the Flowmasters don't look very much like I expected . . . . when they said they were stainless steel . . . I kind of expected them to be silver or at least stainless looking??  But instead they are dark charcoal colored??  Just not what I was imagining.  dontknow  Anyone else have an opinion??     newsad

Does that look like STAINLESS to you??

Flowmasters site says they use 409 series stainless but I don`t know if it comes that way or a coating has been put on it.At work we use a lot of 300 series stainless and it is mucjh lighter in color.I can check tomorow at work for the specs on 409.

4C,
I can understand your shock. Can you tell if maybe it has been coated with something? This might not be a bad thing, but I agree, it isn't what I would expect stainless to be.

Stainless steel is made with a compound called chromium. It properly performs as long as it has oxygen to replenish it's finish. It's been around since 1913. But all the stainless steel hardware on the ocean boats I'm on;i've never seen any that have a dullgrey finish. It almost looks like a spray on galvanizing.

4C, I just checked out the PAW catalog. Theysay that the Borla mufflers are polished. they're made with t-304 aircraft steel.  They are polished. I'm sure they're are other companies that are polished too. It probably comes down to the difference between 403 steel and t-304 polished aircraft stainless. that's my guess

This is what he said...

we have flowmaster stainless mufflers on the barracuda--flowmaster made to my specs for the car-they came in looking like something from the junk yard--they do not polish there mufflers- it takes a while to polish because of the 321 stainless-
here is the difference between 304 and 321--
chromium is about he same-big difference is more nickle in 321 more phosph. , and 5 times the titanium for greater heat- that is why the color is different along with the way they process the material.
here is pic of our muffler after polish
hope this helps
