OK who has turned on the heat yet?
« on: October 19, 2010 - 01:47:10 PM »
With fall here, just wondering who has had to turn on the furnace yet? It's getting close to 0C ( 32F) here at night ( 50F during the day)but so far haven't needed the heat on yet? Got the wood all piled and ready to go though! (We heat our house with a wood-stove) We have forced air electric but it's expensive to run.

Oh and all you guys in Australia or southern California....WHO CARES! :smilielol: :stirpot:
My father in-law used to live in Florida and would watch the weather forecasts and when he saw a real cold snap during the winter he would phone and swish his hand in the pool and tell us that they are having a "wind chill factor" of 85F at the moment! :eek7: ::)

Not looking forward to this.... :crying:

My heat in Michigan went on about the beginning of October.  Into the 40's at night won't cut it and heat is required . . .

Now is the time for winterizing everything!   :walkaway:

Wife made me turn it on a couple of weeks ago ( she uses kids as leverage )... don't need it steady just yet, but looking like soon will be on all the time.
Took screens out of doors and went to glass - got heater out & into garage
Heater kicked on at work this morning... all signs of the white stuff to come.

Lit up the coal furnace at the end of Sept . I burn rice coal . I love the steady heat instead of the hot cold you get with oil . The weather man is calling for possible lake snow tonight but I don't think so yet , he lies all the time . I tell people I'll put my car away the first time they put salt on the roads . YECK is all I can say .  :villagers:

I've been running the heat at night for a couple of weeks now. Our lows have hit low 30s consistently. Still in shirt sleeves during the afternoons, though!

What's "rice coal"? Never heard of that? :dunno:

Rice coal is coal broken into small pieces about the size of a corn kernal . The stove or furnace (different sizes) works the same as a pellet stove , coal goes in hopper , feeds the fire,  only more efficent . Puts out more heat . My brother had one and a couple years ago when heating oil went to over $4.50 per gallon I purchased one . The furnace paid for itself the first year . Oil has come down a lot since that year but still twice the price of coal . The only hassle is the ashes . .

Interesting! Learned something new! Does it burn clean?  What are the ashes like? Why are they a hassle? All I know about coal around here is environmentalists wanting to close the coal fired power generators?
