Wow. They really will not rent it to you because you drive an Explorer? I wouldn't think they could do that. As long as your Explorer has a proper hitch and brake controler, I don't see the problem. All the Firestone tires were recalled or replaced by now. Why would that even be an issue? Do you still have Firestone tires still on yours?

I just don't get it?

Just checked the u-haul web site for you. I don't see where the tow vehicle can not be a Ford Explorer.

From the site.... "

Towing vehicle requirements
Must be equipped with a hard top if it is an SUV. U-Haul does not allow any type of sport-utility vehicle not equipped with a hard top to tow U-Haul equipment.
Must weigh at least 3,500 lbs. (curb weight), and must equal or exceed 80% of the combined weight of the trailer (2,210 lbs.) and the vehicle being towed (up to 5,290 lbs.).
Must have a towing system that has a 5,000 lbs. minimum weight-carrying rating
Must have 1-7/8" or 2" hitch ball (5,000 lbs. minimum)
Must not exceed maximum allowable hitch ball height 25"
Must have external mirrors on both sides
Must have fully operational lighting
Auto transport lighting must be operational at all times, day and night, loaded or unloaded
Maximum recommended speed is 55 MPH
Load trailers heavier in front.
Reduce normal driving speed.
Wear a seatbelt."

I would like to see the policy they quoted you...  :villagers:

What I was told is that when the recall happened the UHAUL company got pulled in and at that time the owner said that he would not rent to explorers anymore to take care of that problem. I have to pull the Dodge from Florida to Texas when I get back and would like to drive in the same car as the rest of my family.

from the site

U-Haul has chosen not to rent behind this tow vehicle based on our history of excessive costs in defending lawsuits involving Ford Explorer towing combinations. This policy is not related to safety issues. This is an unusual circumstance for U-Haul – we have built our success for over 60 years by saying 'yes' to our customers. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and are committed to working with our customers to find alternative options to help with their move.

Sounds like you might have to also rent a tow vehicle at the same time? Just a thought.
