Clutch rattle help
« on: October 22, 2010 - 11:02:02 AM »
well, Ive gotten just about every other rattle worked out, but this one has me stumped, and it is very annoying and pretty loud.
Maybe some of the springs are the wrong type or size, but I have to just barely hold down the pedal while Im cruising at just about any speed to eliminate the rattle, but dont press too hard because a different rattle starts. There is about a 1/4" sweet spot, and I hate having to drive while modulating the clutch pedal with my left foot. Also, from what I can tell the little rubber stops are in place.
The way its set up I have to press about 3/4 of the way to the floor for the clutch to engage, and it does seem to have a small amount of play when its let all the way out, but making the adjustments has me confused.
Any advice?

is the rubber plug in the bracket that the pedal stops up against at the top , the pedal should over center & stay tight at the top but without the rubber isolator in there it would rattle

Do you have the spring that pulls the clutch fork towards the bellhousing? This spring keeps the fork retracted.

Is the clip that holds the fork to the pivot point tight? I've had to grind off the rivets on used ones, to bend them tighter, then nut and bolt them back on. You want the pivot point tight.

If you look up at the clutch fingers and throw out bearing contact surface, do all 3 fingers have the same gap when compared to the other 2? (Borg&Beck or Long-style pressure plate)

I'm thinkung that you putting your foot lightly on the pedal is applying slight pressure to the bearing. Your bearing should not be touching the fingers at all when your foot is off of the pedal.

Probably not but what about a spring or two in the pressure plate broken?
Friend years ago had that happen on a Hayes pressure plate...

I'm even more rattled now.
Spent a good half hour bending my torso under the dash and no luck. The rubber stop is in place, and I greased everything again and still rattles.
Its definitely coming from the clutch pedal area. Not the clutch/throwout bearing area.
Also, the shifter rattles. Checked the base where it connects to the three rods, and cant see where it could be coming from, but it rattles there like crazy too when I get on it. Almost sounds like the handle just below the grip is full of bb's.
I'll post a couple pictures after dinner.

The only time my shifter rattled is when my driveshaft was out of balance and I was rolling pretty good.  Does yours vibrate in neutral reving it up?

these are the shifter pictures.
Everything here seems tight. Anything in particular here prone to rattling?
Does is look bolted together properly?
Just use a general purpose grease on it?

There are a few washers and clips. Any in particular probably rattle, or just tighten everything? Obviously I have to be careful not to overtighten moving/sliding parts.

I dont think so but I'll have to take it around the block to check.

My plastic pistol grips used to rattle a little. I had to put a dab of RTV between then and the metal handle.  When I switched to Gunslinger wooden grips, I did the same with RTV.
