converting from drum to disc on rear
« on: October 23, 2010 - 10:44:47 AM »
Going to convert my rear drums to disc.  Already have disc on the front.  Do I have to change the master cyclinder.  What about th propotioning valve.  Do I still need one.  Don't want to spend alot.  I saw the Baer for around 595.  also SSBC about the same.  Any advice on different brands.  Do any go on easier or work better.

Just curious, what do you have up front?  Stock or aftermarket?

Some people say if you do have stock up front and are thinking about rear disc, it might be an option to upgrade the fronts rather than add rear disc as the fronts do most of the work.

I agree.

Baer have been great performing, hassle free. The parking brake is simple and easy. What do you have in front?  As others have said. Start there. then do the rears. Unless you don't mind them not matching.  More info. needed.

On the front is SSBC.  I am not sure other than that.  The car didn't come with them and they were added by someone else.

I do know if you change from drum to disc you have to get a proportioning valve and a different master cyclinder.  I was thinking of changing the rear drums and changing the master cyclinder to a Red Bore a think is what they call them.  The ad says they improve stopping considerably without having to push any harder on the pedal.  I don't know if you need a proportioning valve if you have all disc.  Anybody know.

I'm pretty sure that you need a proportioning valve regardless of your setup.

The master cylinder has a residual pressure valve in it to maintain 10 psi in the system , this has to be removed for disc brakes or they will drag
SSBC brakes interfere with the rear sway bar , so I do not recommend them
you still need a proportioning valve with 4 wheel disc as the front will do about 70% of the work

I used the Dr Diff kit and didnt change anything but did go to longer wheel studs and had to relocate the sway bar end links. Seems to work pretty well and has parking brake as well.

Mike is there any reason why you went to longer studs.  I see a wheel space on it as well.  Do the disc not stick out as far as drums and I wheel need spacers if I am already close to the springs with the tires.  I don't have any parking brakes now so that would be a plus.  Also Chryco if I already have front disc I would assume as they have been working ok that the master cyclinder would not need anything done to it.

was the master for a front disc system ? if not the front brakes probably drag
there is a rubber valve under the brass insert in the master where the line bolt in , if you insert a small screw & pull outthe brass insert the rubber valve is behind the brass , it can be removed & the brass insert re-installed

I'll have to take a look.  But you really have to stand on the brakes to stop this car.  Would the valve impact the pressure to the calipers making it harder to stop.

I went on the dr diff website, but I didn't find any info about brake kits... Is this a product they have that they don't advertise or was I just not looking in the right place?
