Does anybody have any experience with or knowledge of the MP 440 small block?  It might make a nice sub for the 340 in my 'cuda. :feedback:

you can take a stock 360 block to 412 or a 340 block to 424
it is more expensive to go to 440 using an aftermarket block but will work great

The mopar 440 super commando small block will most likely never be made I have had one on order for almost a year and after many calls I was told that there is no production date set or expected anytime. :swear: :stomp:
The only thing that really made that stroker a decent deal was that is was built with a brand new R-3 Siamese bore block with 48° tappet (improved valve train geometry) the block alone cost over $2000.

There were several demo models built and delivered to various sources. I've seen the mag write ups on them, so they can be built if you really want one, but you won't find them in the crate engine program.

Shady Dell ( a small block Mopar engine shop) informed me that Mopar was having problems with producing the heads and stopped production on the heads, which would then result in production stop on the crate engine.

Hmm.  The engine complete (less carb) is in the '09 Mopar Performance Catalog, and I have recently seen it offered for sale on at least 2 websites in the vicinity of $12,500 - $13,000.

Yes it is in the catalog, and there may have been a few built that companies got there hands on, but last word I got was that production was haulted. I will be at SEMA next week and talk to Mopar to see what I can find out.

You can buy a 426 hemi crate for around that price!

Weren't those the big flow Super Commando heads?

Which could very well help motivate Mopar to forget about resolving the head problem.

I don't really want the heavy weight, gas gulping Hemi in this car, or even a big block 440.  I drive it a fair amount.  It's nice and light on it's feet with a small block.  My 340 is set up for high rpm with a long duration cam.  It has no low end torque, and drinks gas.  It most certainly rocks from 3,500 to 6,000 rpm, but that's not how I want to be driving it.  Anyway, I'm not in any big hurry to change it.

Yes you are getting into hemi price range but some people prefer the small block (like myself).

Yes those were the big flow Super Commando heads.

Seems to me an EFI, cam change & maybe some closed chamber heads on your 340 would achieve most of your goal for 1/3 or less of the cost...more inches=more mower but also more fuel consumption

There are all sorts of variables and conditions that impact mileage, but it seems reasonable to me to think that it is going to require the same amount of fuel to feed 440 inches whether it is packaged in a small block or big block.

Decent mileage, and power for that matter, can be acheived with a carb, but carb tuning to that degree almost seems like a lost art.
