« on: October 27, 2010 - 09:30:37 AM »
1972 Dodge Challanger

1970 440 V8   Fresh Rebuild +.30 Over
Currently MP six-pack cam (Had a 509, still using 509 cam springs)
Torker Intake, 750 Performer Carb
Hooker Comp Headers

Turbo Action 727.  Manual Cheetah Valve Body, 9" 3200 Stall converter
3.91 Gears

** Keep in mind I am running power brakes, so I need to keep the overlap down. <=60

Which would be the better fit.

Comp XE274        274/286   .488/.491  110 LSA
Or
Voodoo 60304 cam.    276/284  .513/.531  110 LSA

Thanks..... John

Heads = 906 with MP 509 springs.   Rated to .540 lift.

One part of the current method of cam selection is to pick the "most lift for the least duration".  The Voodoo has about the same duration and more lift than the comp cam.  Plus some folks say the comp cams have softer metal, thus there have been issues with lobes going flat.  Also buy the recommended lifters to go with the new cam.
Be sure to use engine oil additive with extra zinc to break in the new cam, or a dedicated flat tappet engine oil such as Joe Gibbs break in oil.

Does anyone think I will have a problem with Piston to valve clearance?

Also, is that too much lift for a street engine ?

How much compression?

You could also call or fill in a questionnaire on the lunati and comp website to see what cam they recommend.

It would depend on which piston you used but typicaly you are safe up to .530 lift with most pistons
Cam lift is free , it will not affect the idle or powerband of the engine , I have street engines running over .600 lift with no issue

With the low exhaust duration (284) of the cam, the .533 should clear hopefully.

I believe we used TRW stock +.30 pistons.  (Been about 7 years)
They weren't high CR pistons.
