to cut in gills or not to cut in gills?
« on: October 27, 2010 - 09:19:12 PM »
 :feedback:

I have a 70 column shift 318 barracuda- I've got a 440 to go in and I have the exhaust cutout rear valence with the chrome tips ready to go. I already bought the louvers from tony's parts and have the chrome inserts and everything. One body guy told me not to cut those in as it will probably screw up my fenders. I know its not a 71 and its not correct, but I figure what the hell - its my car and like the muscle car tv guys said "it just looks damn cool" I think so too. I'm looking for some feedback should I do it and if I should should I jsut flange the hole I cut i the fender drop the patch in with some panel adhesive and smooth it out with some body filler- should be good to go. let me know what you think

It's just me but they look out of place on anything other than a 71, but at the end of the day its your car and do what makes you happy.

I've seen patch pieces for the gill sections.  Can't remember where I saw them but it may be easier to weld in the patches vs. cutting out each gill.  Then you don't have to worry about alignment and angle issues by cutting them out yourself.

There are a few people who stamp the louvers instead of patching them in.

Go for it !!

I'd have a long way to go to make it into a 71 clone

The gills are meant for 71's, but I say do what you want it's your car after all. I actually considered it for a short time on my 72, but decided against it as I had bought brand new fenders. If I'd had a pair of old junk fenders lying around I might have tried it.

The gills can be purchased at B/E& A Restoration Parts.  It’s a weld in patch, comes in a pair, for $99.
The rest of the hardware can also be Had here; http://www.beaparts.com/

I’ve bought parts from here and Mike is easy enough to talk with. He has a cool Cuda and has been highlighted in Mopar Collector’s Guide mag.

If you want to do it.  Do it.  I too am strongly considering doing it to something other than a '71.  "It just looks damn cool."

unless youre going for a true clone look, since youre going to the trouble maybe consider doing something different...like maybe real and functional gills, and maybe ones that look more like real fish gills. Just something custom that would really make it stand out.
Easy for me to say, but I've never been one to like nonfunctional scoops and other styling gimmicks. :2cents:
