Looking at a project and need some help...
« on: November 14, 2004 - 04:19:48 PM »
I found an ad for a project 71 Cuda 383 with auto tranny. This car does not have a front clip. He says that the car does turn over and run, although not a driver. It is an 8 3/4 car. It has the typical lower quarter rust, but the floorpans and framerails are solid. He says that the trunk pan might need to be replaced, though. It is a two-tag car, although both are missing. The car had a leather interior.

First of all, how could one find a replacement front clip? Secondly, how hard would it be to track down fender tag info? Lastly, how hard is it to replace/patch the trunk pan? Does $4500 sound like a reasonable price? I will post pics when I recieve them.

I'm not that familiar with Cuda's, but I have to think finding a decent front clip might cost you almost as  much as you are putting out already. Those grills are rare. Maybe I'm wrong here dontknow

i can imagine finding a front clip is extremely hard and the 71 grills are very expensive...the cheapest I have found a good grill with all the trim is about $1100... and i found chrome trim at $50 a peice just for the 6 inserts, not counting the trim around the entire outside... but still... with the prices of cars now it might now be a bad investment... does it have fenders? goodmark signed with chrysler to start producing parts and goodmark says gill fenders will be hitting the market fall of 2005... so maybe front clips or parts of them will be availible??
thats just my thoughts ... if it were me... i would really consider it, some of the other guys and gals on here could offer more experienced advice, but good luck...

$5000 sounds like a decent price for that car with a front clip, 4500 without is a bit rich needing a full resto.

If you dont have fender tags or a build sheet, you cant find out the imformation on options, 100%

you'd bee looking at possibly $17,000-$20,000 grand all said and done.. for a car that will be worth like 40,000... lots of time and money, if you decide against this car let me know... i would possibly be interested, what state?
 thanks again...

A car without tags will never be worth that kind of money.

$20K total is probably on the low side, assuming that you do this right and you do it yourself. Plan on $7K alone for metal and parts. If you aren't going to do the work yourself, you'd probably be better off just buying one that's done already. As far as the missing tags killing the car's value, it may move you down from $40K to $35K, assuming that the vin indicates that this is a real '71 383 Cuda and the original frame vin stampings are in place and matching. Galen Govier (among others) can restamp fender tags. Galen will only restamp a tag if you can document the options on the car via records, build sheet, etc. He's very picky.

If the car is what you want, then go for it (assuming that you'll be doing the work yourself). If not, put my name on the list of people interested in the car.

Do you have the first  digits of the VIN? That would tell us if it is an original big block car and if it's
a real 'CUDA or not

4500 is top dollar now for a car like that with all the pricey pieces missing but I bet in a couple of years
you would be glad you made the deal now and maybe you have a numbers big block car burnout

If you were really desperate to drive it you might even drop another years front end or 'glass repro
hood and fenders to get it on the road patriot

Would there be any way to track down these fender tags, or the info on them. I know Chrysler Historical only goes up to 1967. Maybe have a police officer do a search for the VIN, and see if anyone has attempted a rebody with them?

Lemon71- Tell ya what, you have info I want, I have info you want. Lets trade. You tell me where that 1971 440-6 Cuda project is in PA, as well as those crate hemis, and I'll tell you where this car is.

73Challenged,

Those are the numbers of which I speak since I consider the whole skeleton the frame (since there is no frame in the conventional sense)   grinno
