A 72 cuda, with a 440, an old drag car.
I am trying to make a weekend warrior out of it.

The motor is from a 73 model fury (I ran the #'s on the internet).
I find that fortuitous, as so was my first cuda motor.
I know this because I took it out myself, of an old fury III unmarked police car (complete with spotlight) out of a junk yard.
The motor is pretty strong.
It has on it a Edelbrock performer intake and headers, the rest is a Mystery?


Roll cage,3 speed torque flight (I think), it has turbo trans stickers on the car.
A Hurst pistol grip with lock out and mystery button? and yes, I'm fishing for answers on the button.
I think it is a nitrous or start relay safety switch, either way it is unhooked.

The rear end is not tubbed but the rear leaf springs have been moved in.
They now sit in the exhaust cutouts.
For wider tires.
Now all I need is some crager super sports(with the proper wheel offset, I want the wheels up under the car all the way).

The rear end is an 8 3/4 but is geared so low!!
I don't know how streetable it will be?
It is full time posi (it barks the tires when you turn) in the old school I would expect bolted and welded spider gears.
But these guys put some money in it so who knows what is possible these days?

1968 Dodge Dart 2dr Sedan..Factory 6 cyl. car with 3 on da tree and a 7 1/4 rear with 12" wheels.
505 Cu. In. "Junk" motor I built 15 Years ago long before you could just buy off the shelf Stroker kits..Has out dated and heavy as hell Ross pistons I paid over $850.00 set for..
Bought the stroker crank off a buddy that bought one of the very first Hughes 505 motors and spun a rod bearing. They wouldn't do anything for him, so he went and got an Indy, 540 Stroker instead. Bought the crank not knowing if it'd last one run. Turned one journal .030 under and lost count @ over 25 Reciepts for Nitrous..
Bombed a 200 HP shot on it for over 10 years, ran a best of 6.70 ONE TIME with a good hook. most times it was all over the place. Anywhere from a 6.88-7.50...NEVER been apart. NEVER blown a head gasket.
 
Rear suspension is some cobbled up junk, 6 cylinder sh*t with added leaves ("Homemade" S/S Springs), and a pinion snubber.
Owner fabbed 8 point cage, owner installed.
Owner built "Junkyard" 727, with nothing more than a $400.00 Nitrous Converter (3500-4000 GER), and a "Homemade" shift kit.
Front suspension consists of worn out stock shocks and 6cyl T-bars.
Solid Owner fabbed motor mounts on a 6 cylinder K Frame before there was Shumacher Services "kits"..Made out of old "I" beam..
Rearend is a "741" "Weak" 8 3/4, 3.91 SureGrip out of a junkyard, old State Dept. truck..Never been into or rebuilt, just shortened by owner with moser stock shortened and resplined axles.
Had to drill holes through the floorboard in order to get to the bellhousing bolts from the front seat area, as the trans is that close underneath.
Homemade and shortened driveshaft. Owner done..No balance..
Owner done bodywork still in primer after 15 years..Owner fabbed 4" cowl hood, all steel..


Yep, I'm the one in the pit area that everybody is scratchin' their heads wondering how in the hell that POS went that fast....

 Hey Don, I'm running a mellow 340 which the car came with, added a 484 lift Purple shaft cam , TRW 10.5 to 1 compression pistons, and an LD340 intake. Oh, an headers. Probably runs about 13.5 in the Q-mile with the 3:55's and it has lasted 21 years so far as I try to keep it under 6000 RPM's ya know :grinno:

I have 2 motors.........and I'm trying to get rid of one, to help fund the other one lol. The first motor I got was a 440, and I planned to build it up to a 512 stroker. But my goals were over 500 hp and 20 mpg on the highway. I realized with the help of some people on here that the 500 hp was very possible, but the 20 mpg would be difficult to obtain (even with the somewhat mild gearing I had in mind).

So I started looking around and found a heck of a deal on a 3rd gen 5.7 hemi. I have the same hp and mpg goals and they are more realistic this time. I know of a few people that have done 6.1 hemis in there cars and are getting 425 hp and 22 mpg. So I am thinking a 6.4 (392 ci) stroker kit for my goals of 500 hp and 20 mpg.
Cuda is gone :(

69 notch barracuda with 440+30over.
The engine's been dusted as it had no air cleaners when I got it and it uses it's share of oil.
Bores are scrappy but it's got good oil pressure.
Compression ratio is 9.3:1
Cam is purpleshaft 484 lift with std rockers
Heads are 915s with 2.14/1.81 SS valves and mild porting.
Weiand sixpack superstock manifold with 2x350s as primaries and the centre 650 2bbl as the secondary(or thirdary as I call it :roflsmiley:)
Pipes are home made 2" primaries into 4" collectors and exiting through twin 4" Xpipe system with flowmasters.
MSD 6AL and MSD billet dizzy.
Holley blue full return fuel system,electric water pump and electric fans.

Trans is full race prep reverse pattern manual valve body727 with Dominator 4500 stall and B&M proratchet

Diff is 8.75 spooled with 3.55 ratio and Currie billet axles

Superstock springs
Pinion snubber
Chassis connectors

Best quarter 12.0@110
Best eighth 7.6@88
Best 60' 1.62

493 stroker at 10.7:1 on it's way aiming for high 10s
Burnouts are cool but Traction is the Action

Good idea! I may build something like that for mine when it's time. Probably just out of DOM instead of chromo. I'll surely have a tubing bender and welder for the Jeep someday! :cheers:
