Opinions on this ignition
« on: November 12, 2010 - 08:45:39 AM »
I was looking around on ebay yet again... Came across this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MOPAR-413-426-440-FORCE-IGNITION-SYSTEM-6614-SYSTEM-/350376457434?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item51941074da
And was wondering what you all might think about this... I'd consider it, other than the fact that the Ford community accepts this set up.... Seems to be ok, has a few features I like, but my brand new wiring harness that's gonna be going on the car is setup for a more factory ignition which I'm also thinking of running. I can't tell you what kind of power I'm gonna be running for sure but I'd imagine around 500ish at the crank. What I've leaned toward the most is a new Mopar Performance electronic distributor with vacuum adv (yes the adj dist and vac adv), chrome box, factory style wiring harness (really rather not cut up a new harness), and a high voltage coil (MSD Blaster 2 minimum, but am thinking of something more like the PerTronix Flame-Thrower Ignition Coils rated at 60,000 volts)... Either way....

No personal experience with this setup, but all I have read says good things about it. With the parts it has, it should be a lot like a "poor man's MSD." Personally, I like the MOPAR setup, and parts are readily available nationwide. The chrome box is probably not necessary for you. Its real advantages come with sustained operation above 7,000 rpm. My orange box works fine up to 7,200 rpm, and has never missed a beat. The hotter coil is a good idea, and decent 8mm wires are also an excellent idea. The selection of aftermarket ignition systems for our engines is phenomenal now, with all kinds of options. You can even run a (GASP!) GM-style HEI. The major advantage of most aftermarket systems is a hotter spark, and less scatter at higher rpm, due to tighter tolerances in distributor manufacture. I prefer factory fit and ease of repair.

I've already got a set of MSD Street Fire wires on it that will remain for now. The motor has a points type dist in it b/c that's what the motor came with (non original 440). I will be going to an electronic setup, just trying to figure which....
The M.P. Distributor: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DCC-3690432/
If I remember right the manufacturing of the orange box went from Mexico to China, and the quality dropped a little, but could be wrong? CRS.....
I've looked at a few different brands, obviously Mopar Performance and MSD, but also Pertronix, Proform (I think), and some others... I've asked this question in the past as far as different setups, but there's obviously new stuff coming out a lot now for our ol' Mopars so... What was really nice yesterday may still be nice today but could be a lil better out now... Anyway, just ran across the above mentioned setup and am looking for feedback. One thing I have to keep in mind is that most can talk a good talk but can their products back their talk... :smokin:

They look like repackaged MSD. There are any number of OEM manufacturers who will rebrand and repackage items for resale by major distributors, like Procomp, Summit, Jegs, etc. You might do some searches on Procomp ignition and see what turns up.

I had looked at the Summit stuff in the past... I will probably end up running the Mopar Performance stuff so I want have to worry about cutting up a brand new wiring harness... Course, if I end up going with that ISIS Power Unit stuff.... Should help cut down on some more weight, not to mention the fact that I want to move the battery to the trunk....

with the problems I have had with the MSD junk , I would definatly be looking at similar products @ 1/2 the price , Crane still has the HI6 digital with dials instead of chips to limit RPM , Mallory has a similar product , never tried the one you are looking at

I did get to thinking about something, so I'll go ahead and ask it...
Mechanical advance, or vacuum advance?
This will be a street driven motor, but I'm going to be running the VooDoo 60303 with 1.6 rockers... Indy dual plane intake, and an 850 Holley double pumper...

I would leave the vacuum disconnected or dialed most of theway out & run a mechanical curve only

Well, I asked the question because I'm gonna be getting a different distributor than what on the motor now (vac adv points type).... So if the vac adv want do for me, and the mechanical will be my better way to go, then why not just go with a mech adv dist rather than a vac adv?

most dist except the billet aftermarket ones still have the vacuum advance unit , it doesn't mean you have to hook it up though

I think in the near furture I will convert mine to HEI. I am sure I have the parts lying around so for next to no cost its gonna be big bang for buck. Not much better than that.   :2thumbs:

Hmmm... Free, and someone else to do it :smilielol:.... J/J  Before I start getting replacement ign stuff, I'd like to be sure on what I'm going to get, then turn around after the fact and say well hmmm... Wish I had rather gotten that instead of this... The car will be on the street, I'd est no more than 550 hp at the crank (if it hits 550 hp at the crank I'd be quite surprised... So...
