70 Cuda U Code: catch and release

 For context, he is a restorer and has been in the business about 20 years - he does Mopars and has restored and sold about 30 cars - he calls the car about 90% complete

VIN: car looks to have the original vin tag - meaning it does not appear to be faked - the engine, radiator yoke/rail, cowl and trunk all have the partial vin stamped

Engine: as above, it is vin stamped and therefore original - it is mostly complete (in terms of numbers matching/date correct) - it does not have the original carburator or air cleaner - i don't know about the intake manifold or smaller items like pumps, alternator, etc -

Transmission: it is not the original, 18 spline Hemi trans that the car came with and would have had the vin stamped - it does have casting numbers, but he never chased those down - so it is either a date correct trans at best, or a four speed that works at worst

Fender tag: MISSING

rear end: he call it original - so that means it is date correct at best b/c as you point out, it does not have the vin stamped on it - but it is the correct dana rear end (3.54 gear i think)

Body: he is very enthusiastic on the body - says it is all original sheet metal including quarter panels - he says the only sheet metal that would have to be replaced is the trunk floor

Color: yellow

Interior: all there, but needs to be redone - has correct rallye dash and cluster - didn't ask about smaller items (radio for example), but he did say the seats and seat frames are all there - so let's say pretty complete interior that needs restoration

Exterior: about the same - meaning, pretty complete but needs restoration - so bumpers there (rubber front, chrome back) - assuming the tail light assemblies are there - grill is there

So - what do you guys think in terms of value? - let's make the assumption that it is a true U code car, not a rustbucket but in good shape, mostly there (only main thing missing is the tranny (and the fender tag)), engine and drive train rebuilt, but needing a full restoration

Daytona - thank you for taking my joke the right way

Mike is right...risky to start off joking until people know you enough to know you aren't being a jerk

Anyway...this car is being sold locally and i think i will buy it - probably late on trying to figure out value, but the deal isn't done yet and so hey...better late than never

value is tough right now because the market is so far off

but i was trying to get a sense from folks that have been closer to mopars than i have (this would be my first) what they might pay for a car like this

if i do pull the trigger, we'll have lots, lots more to talk about

We're here to help and please be careful.

A recent new member just got his hide chapped because he didn't console with us enough prior to pulling the trigger. Sometimes these cars can be Wolves under Sheeps skin so it never is a good idea to get overwhelmed on what you think is a great deal and then find out you wished you bought some Swamp land in FL instead.

If so, be very careful, that is an B body & some A body thing. A 1970 Cuda should have body numbers on the cowl & radiator support.

No VIN on the rear axle housing, ever.

Are we estimating the value of a car or a man?

You say the market is "so far off". Maybe the market WAS WAYYYyyyyy off when prices of these cars were stupidly unrealistic. Like the housing market, maybe for a while people will buy these cars to keep rather than flip.

Without pictures, a real 440-4bbl cuda with rallye gauges and a front rubber bumper could be worth anywhere from $8-$20K.

Obviously, you mean the casting number, not a "stamp". The last 7 just means that the casting model was used 6 times prior to this block being cast, thus this one is number 7.

Look on the other side of the block. There will be displacement and a date cast there. On one of the oil pan rails the partial VIN should be STAMPED there. (B0xxxxxx) On the top of the motor is a squarish pad. There will be more numbers stamped there. At the very least it should read F440 and HP.
