Bad day at the shop
« on: November 14, 2010 - 09:16:06 PM »
In building the 440 for my 70 Challenger project I thought I was set for the induction system.  I planned to use a cast iron 440 1-4 bbl intake from 1969. I have an 850 cfm thermoquad that came off the 340 that was in the car.  Today I tried mating the intake and carb and my day went south.  The 440 intake looks pretty open for flow but the ports are 1.730 inches while the carb has 1.5 inch primaries and 2.25 inch secondaries.  Also the centers are mismatched so that the butterfly's will not open.   How much flow and what carb would work on the manifold.  I feel I need at least 800 cfm. Do I need to start over with another manifold? I've attached a picture of the Hemi Orange manifold, the 340 manifold and the 850 cfm carb.

What you have there is a square bore intake and a spread bore carb.
I love Thermoquads(the spread bore) but what you will need is A: a new intake for the spread bore thermoquad or B: just get your self a square bore 750 edelbrock or Holley carb.
Should work out great.
Did I say that I really like the Thermoquads.

I would keep the thermoquad IMO they are better than the edelbrock.  Also note your 440 intake at the right front near primary port does not have the extra material that the newer edelbrock carbs need to cover a vacuum passage that is cast into the base of the carb throttle body.
Notice the extra material in the area described on this intake:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1969-440-intake-manifold-/250726513266?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a6076fa72

Here is the intake you need for your thermoquad, dirty but the price is right if no cracks or stripped threads:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1976-440-MOPAR-INTAKE-MANIFOLD-FOUR-BARREL-3830733-1-/150520133014?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item230bb2f596

Heres a Tquad intake cleaned up for a little more money:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Roadrunner-GTX-Charger-Polara-Satellite-440-intake-/260668136035?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cb1081a63

Notice the throttle shafts on your Tquad are green color, that is the original teflon coating applied at the factory.  That means your carb has not been bead blasted which ruins the factory coating and can cause the shafts/shaft holes to wear faster.  So better potential you have a good carb.

Thanks for the replys!  Good information.  I will go for a spread bore cast iron.  I like the looks of stock but want the highest flow I can get.  Now I know what spread bore and square bore means.  I had my square bore all cleaned and painted, ready to torque down and now will start over.  Not the first time I've made a misstep in this restoration.  The trouble is the engine was acquired without all the bolt on's and I didn't know what all was available. What a great web site!  PK

Where are you? I have a spread bore stock cast iron intake you can have( great shape,no rust) ? Also have a adapter that was on it to go from sqaure bore to spread bore that came on the intake, if either will work for you it's yours! Just pay the shipping? I ask where are you as it's heavy so shipping costs might be prohibitive as I'm in Canada? About 120 miles north of Buffalo NY?

Hit the wrecking yards out your way and look for a 440 powered Chrysler from I'd say 73 up. Also do a search on local Craigslist and other online classifieds for cars being stripped wrecked etc...

Great response!  Brads 70, thanks for the very generous offer.  I may take you up on it but first I need to do a local search.  Olympia, WA is a long way from you.  There is a local restoration shop (Rocket Restorations) that possibly has one.  I like the idea of using the thermoquad with it's 850 cfm since the primaries are so small and secondaries are so large.  Should give good economy until I stick my big foot in it
If you have a picture I would like to see it.  I'm not concerned about the appearance of the manifold since I would clean and paint it anyway.  I'll get back to you that ,yes I need it or, no I found one locally.  Thanks again! PK

Man it's heavy, I'd forgotten! :smilielol: Funny I was gonna toss it out for scrap but figured "someone" may want it someday? Are you "sure" you don't want to use an aluminum intake...? :grinyes: Here are some pictures.... It's off my 440 I was told it was out of  a motorhome?

Thanks for the picture.  Looks like it would work.  Weight?  Yes, they are heavy.  Using an aluminum intake  would save several pounds.  I went from a 340 to a 440 and that is a big jump weight wise.  I did go with aluminum heads and that took 40 pounds off.  But, the 440 is still a heavy brute.  You've got me thinking!  PK

I went with a Holley street dominator intake!

and an aluminum water pump and housing and rad.....I'm getting to be a bit of a weight freak! :grinyes: :smilielol:

I was thinking today.... for what shipping would cost, if you spent a few more bucks you could just get an aluminum intake and get some more performance and the weight break! It seems nuts to put a cast iron boat anchor intake on aluminum heads! :eek4:
Also down the road you could switch to a Holley carb or whatever if you wanted to without swapping intakes!
