Finally got my car on the road, 70 chally.  Drove it this week end, yahoo!  Couldn't stop to get gas without a crowd gathering.  One guy yells at his buddy " Hey you have got to come see this Charger" , I didn't say a word.  All in all it went great but I do have a problem with the rearend, it's whining/singing.  I had driven it with open headers but hadn't noticed until I had the exhaust put on it last week.  I drove it about a hundred miles over the week end but it looks like I am going to have to replace the center chunk on the rear end.  What would be the problem?  Just checking on my options.  Thanks, Danny

More likely to be the mesh between the pinion and ring gear.
Proper adjustment/shimming MAY improve it but probably not if it's been run like that for a while.

this may sound lame , but have you checked the fluid level? and if its a suregrip , do you have the additive in there?

yes I installed it, put the fluid in it myself and I put additive in as well.  I bought the center section off of a parts guy.  I am not going to worry about it right now but I am probably going to have to take it out and go through it.  I have to have the 727 adjusted, the guy that rebuilt it said to bring it back after I put it in and he would do that, goes through the gears to quick.  I may see if he will do it, he use to do alot of rearends.  But it was a blast getting to finally drive it.  I had actually forgotten what it was like to drive one.     Thanks Danny

  Not to get off-topic, but sounds like your kick down linkage needs adjusted if the car shifts too fast. I know when I first bought my car, I swear it was in hi gear by 10 MPH.

Exactly, my car is in drive before I get to 10mph as well.

In my old 5th ave, my 8 1/4 rear end was whining and I replaced the spider/differential gears and it fixed the problem....temporarily.  Sound came back though.  Not sure if aybe the issue was actually the ring and pinion or else because I didn't shim the differential gears when I installed them.

you will need to install a new ring & pinion the bad news is I do not of anyone making 3.23 gear sets

As Chryco mentioned, not in 3.23, but other gear ratios are available.... time for a 3.55?

Surely there'd be plenty of 2nd hand good 3.23s over there wouldn't there be?
Would have been very common OEM ratio?

I bought my 3.23 stump from a local Mopar guy, but like someone said "there is a reason they were pulled to begin with".  May just go with a 3.55.  Thanks, Danny
