Need the casting date and look at the little pad next to the distributor hole and scratch it really good with something in order to read the symbols and numbers...

Should say something like "H"  440 maybe a "T" (For Trenton plate not "truck"), and maybe a Maltese cross, Diamond, "X" etc. symbols.

Cylinder walls *look* ok.  Hopefully they will actually BE ok.  We'll wait for the machine shop to say for sure.

I'll pull the rest of the numbers off the motor and add them here.  I need to drag this out a bit so this thread can hit 5 pages.

I'm trying to help you hit five pages!  On boring the late blocks, I doubt you'll have a problem.  Some say the late blocks are thinner.  I've heard that is true but was made possible by more accurate casting, so less likely to have a thin spot.  The only sure way to know is to have it tested but I've heard that barring a casting flaw, possible in any block, that you can go .060 over in the late blocks.  PK

O.K. I can help ya.

Do you know anything on the history of the engine when/where you bought it? How did you get it? CL?

The one thing I would've of wanted to know the most if I were the buyer is how many miles were estimated it had. Any history on it's past.

When engines get real high milaged, the cylinder walls get tapered. Wider at the top and narrowing towards the bottom end. Take the shortblock in and get it spec'd. Then give us an update.

History of the motor...

This came out of the late Billy West's field in Selma, NC.  For those that don't know Billy; he was a bigger mopar guy than all of us combined.  He's been gone for several years.  I'd estimate there are at least 500 cars still in his field.

We pulled my 71 318 Challenger, my 73 340 Cuda, a 71 340 Duster, and a 70 383 Road Runner out of the field.  The sad part is that 2 years ago there was probably some stuff worth saving.  We took our cars out this year and there wasn't much left worth saving.  In 2 years there probably won't be anything worth saving :(

Back to the motor... The motor was stored with the tranny still attached in the back off a bus that he was using for storage.  I couldn't ask Billy about the motor because he isn't here anymore to answer, but I assumed that if he was trying to keep it dry and safe in the back of the bus that it must be OK.  I guess we'll see.

OK... more castings:

The date code is 6 9 74.  The letters D N are stamped below that.

On the pad to the right of the distributor I found the following:

41440 6 with 6 11 stamped below that.

Anything on the boss that is on the passengers side right where the oil pan connects to the block.

CH,

I don't see any... although the motor is covered in crud.  Is it under the motor mounts?  I still have them on the motor... so if it is that would be why I couldn't find them.

have you tried soaking the pistons in Marvle Mystery Oil for a couple days? It has worked for me on quite a few engines
