RE: Safety warnings/concerns about 50/50 mix of tranny fluid and acetone.  While I'm as safety concious as anyone I was amused at the extent of warnings from posters.  I wouldn't envision someone mixing 55 gallon batches of the stuff then applying with back-pack sprayers.  It's more likely that it would be mixed a few ounces at a time and applied in drops.  In un-sticking a stuck 440 it would take several, maybe lots of drops but it's no worse than spraying or dripping  on a like amount of any other penetrant.  Now days it seems everything comes in areosol cans including penatrants.  I tried the mix and it works very well and when the acetone combines with trans fluid it calms way down in volitility.  It's the same acetone that we all use with body fillers, equipment clean-up and many other uses around the shop.  Yes, always be careful using flamables.  PK

Also remember that the fumes can be more dangerous than the liquid itself.

OK, so I mixed up a batch of tranny and diesel fluids and sprayed them on the motor while smoking a cigarette.  I'm still looking for pieces of my face...   :roflsmiley:

Actually, we tried the 4x4 and a BIGGER hammer approach with success.  It took a couple solid whacks with one guy holding the 4x4 and the other providing the persuasion.  We pulled most of the pistons out (we'll finish tomorrow) and I'll be sending this bad boy out.

I never did get to test the secret recipe you guys recommended.  I'll save that one for the next stuck motor.

engineer,

Believe me... we had a quick heart to heart before I let him swing about what would happen if he missed the 4x4.

I still need to pull the numbers off the block.  I was more worried about freeing up the motor :)

So to those anxiously waiting at their keyboards... this motor has the following numbers:

3830930 440-6

I'm assuming this means what I think it means... but in case I don't know what it means; please tell me!

Doh!

What else can you guys tell me about this motor?  Does anyone have a link to some type of mopar engine decoder?  VIN and Fender tags are easy; but I haven't found anything for motors.

Can you double check those numbers? Sometimes they might be hard to read. Clean em real good with a wire brush and use a magnifying glass if you're unsure on any number.

I went to this site but your casting numbers didn't come up. I'm suspecting you have a mid 70's 440 with a cast crank.

TC,

The numbers aren't very hard to read.  I'll take a picture and post them.  It is DEFINITELY none of the castings that are listed on that site...

Jon

Edit:

I found my casting on this site:

http://www.mopar1.us/casting.html

It appears to be a valid casting.  This site says it is a 73 - 79 motor.  I pulled the casting number but didn't bother checking the manufacture date.  I'll do that as well.

I still need to figure out what I want to do with this motor.  Just send it out and have it rebuild; do something mild with it, or stroke the hell out of it.

I would go mild with it.  It is one of the newer 440's and they are supposed to have thinner walls.  The only way to really know is to have the walls checked for thickness.

What do the cylinder bores look like now with the pistons out?
