PPG paint quote
« on: November 23, 2010 - 10:27:42 PM »
As some here may know, I'm planning on painting my car completely in PPG Deltron B-2 Glacial Blue, base coat/clear coat. Here's the quote I got today.

Are these prices inline? I think I need to increase to 2 gals of B/C?  Should I buy online these items if the price is significantly better than this? Who would you recommend?

Are you painting the inside and bottom of the car?  Engine bay too, right?  Are you planning on doing base / clear on everything or single stage on the bottom and inside of the car?

Are you using the epoxy primer as a sealer?

Yes. Probably get 1 gallon of Featherfill prior to that also.

Instead of wasting money on another gallon of expensive basecoat,I'd spend that money on tintable sealer and have it nearly same color as the basecoat ,it is never a good idea to hose on alot of basecoat, and some colors will take more than 3 coats to get good coverage and hideout .Tintable sealer is more durable than basecoat and serves as a good tie-coat between your primer surfacer and the basecoat.

Another suggestion is to find a local jobber that sells Matrix ,you won't even pay half of what you'd pay for Deltron and it will have same or better outcome. Want to know why? Because I've been using it everyday for probably 15 years

I agree tinting the sealer. I asked that yesterday. Dude said PPG sealer can't be tinted. They sell a DP60LF which is a blue epoxy primer. I'm hearing its too dark for B-2 to use.

Then there's the Coating store.com for tinted primer. Tempted. But no known adhesion knowledge when used with PPG. I e-mailed them they didn't have an exact answer.

I need more information on Matrix. I'll need to make a trip down to Watsonville for that.

I painted my car with PPG paints - deltron DBC  with DCU2021 clear about a year ago and the prices I paid here are pretty close to what you were quoted. I used the DP50lf epoxy as a seal coat .  For comparrison---gallon DBC   395.00,  gal  clear  210.00,   gal dp50  141.00.  Hardeners and reducers were about the same  price.  I painted the engine bay, jambs ,and trunk/wheel wells, inside front fenders. Did not paint the floor or anything underneath and used 1 1/2 gallons of paint. The painter said he was down to the last drop of paint to finish it so you should have some left with 2 gal.  I really like how it turned out with the PPG products.

:clueless: You are the first shop that I have heard positive things about Matrix paint, I am honestly amazed that you have not had problems with it. All of the people I know in the paint industry refuse to use Matrix products due to numerous problems with the product (and believe me it is not the painters or the prep work as most of them primarily do high end show car work).

Most of the painters I know use PPG products. I would get a sealer. If you really want to make the color POP use a white sealer, if not, like stated you can tint it to use less base.

Stick to the PPG and you'll most likely need at least 2 gal.
