Electrical issue 70 Cuda
« on: November 25, 2010 - 12:29:34 PM »
After replacing all harnesses w/M&H wiring, I hooked up the battery and the fusible link blew right away and the battery was arcing real bad at the ground side of the battery, where I was connecting the ground cable. After checking all the harnesses, the only thing I can see I did wrong, was the the fuel gauge wires were swapped. Could that have caused the link to blow?

The keys were not in the ignition.

I'll say "No" here.

It takes something to be majorly wrong to blow that fusible link.  Your fuel gauge wouldn't have had power to it until you turned the key to the "on" position.

Ok, I am really wondering what went wrong.  The starter relay and Amp meter are new, I am guessing that leaves the new engine, dash harnesses or Alt wiring. Or did I forget something?

2 things, where can I find another fusible link and would the wire from the Batt touching the wire going to the ground, constitute a major ground?

I see fusible link for Chrysler listed on most auto parts stores web sites...I suppose they stock them.
To blow the link the short will be in the harness or a device it is connected to. I'd use a meter to ohm the system, you can start where the link goes checking for continuity from the wire to the body, disconnect at the next juncture & ohm again until there is no continuity. The last section you disconnected will be where the problem lies, then it's just a matter of tracing it to the source of the short.

Thanks guys, I know it is passed the Amp meter, as I had the battery connected before installing the new Amp meter. I am really going to be mad, if it is one of my brand new harnesses. Can anybody tell me which circuits are hot, the key off ?

My fuse box has 7 fuses, with 4 of them live with the key off.

Dome light, parking lights, headlights(if switch is on), brake lights, cigarette lighter, horn, another circuit is for the clock(if you have one)... These are just off the top of my head.

so you have a Batt terminal somewhere touching ground ??
likely places are a short in the alt causing the heavy wire to short to ground or a short in the red wire through the firewall feeding the ign switch

That was a bit harsh, sorry moparal.

Chryco, I thought I had a batt terminal touching ground. Whe I disconnected the wire from the batt to the relay, it was only part of the wire insulation that was touching.

On the alt, on the 3 wires going to the alt. The big black one goes to the positive post, but does it matter which one the other 2 are connected?
I called M&H and they said the green and blue can go to either of the 2 remaining connectors.

the 2 wire to the alt can go on either terminal
