mini starter?
« on: November 17, 2004 - 04:31:54 PM »
I'm replacing the headers on my small block cuda and now would be a good time to replace the starter too. Considering what a bear it is to pull the starter with the headers and the scattersheild and block plate and hydralic clutch linkage all in the way. I keep hearing about the mini starters and how much more room you gain and easy replacement but I haven't a clue as to what years or models it came on. Also is it a direct replacement for the large starter? Also how is it for cranking torque? My present starter has been tricked out to spin over my small block with hi compression (a buddy at the starter shop rewound the armature or fields for me years ago and it works really well but it has to be getting tired) Any info appreciated

If anyone could give a year make and model so when I go to the parts house I don't look totally lost it would help too (for a 360 with 4 speed)

any of the Magnum 360 engines use a direct bolt on mini starter from 93 up in trucks & vans , they have plenty opf torque to sipn over a high compression 440 no problem

 :iagree:
I have a mini, and I can't believe how easily it turns over my 440. Keep in mind, the mini is shorter, and MUCH lighter, but I don't think it is any smaller width wise. So there might still be a close call with a header tube or two. I'm only speaking from my experience with big blocks. Maybe it isn't an issue with you.

Looks like I have to go get a mini ...after several hours of fighting it and trying everything it looks like these headers were made with the mini in mind...I'm just 1/2 inch from going onto the front stud and the flange just won't stretch ....LOL

MAXcuda,
I have a question. What are those lines running next to your starter? I have a 70 Challenger, and nothing could possibly get near that beast :madvibe: I don't know how old you are, but if you are old enough, you know the sound of those old Mopar starters. That's one thing the mini doesn't have :( It just doesn't have that old Mopar sound. It sounds more like any modern day car.

would guess those are tranny cooler lines.

the old mopars sounded like  you were stepping on a cat.

Maxcauda, that is the older big starter. If you ever have it out of the car and compare it to the newer mini starter you will definately be able to tell the difference in both size and weight.

MEKrunner, those are the tranny cooler lines.

Yep, tranny cooler lines.  Its an AC car, so I have the 26" radiator.  They run from the bottom of the radiator to the drivers side of the transmission.  Man if thats the big starter, the mini starter must be really little.  I do kinda like the stepping-on-a-cat sound.

Just walked out in the garage and snapped this for your reference.  Yep alittle smaller and I think they sound better too!
