New roof, what manufacturer?
« on: November 27, 2010 - 09:42:38 AM »
Hey Guys,   The wife and kids are going to buy a new roof for my 74 barracuda project for Xmas.  Columbia has them on ebay for around 400,   550 for an AMD,  Which is best deal,  are they the same, does one fit better than another?   Will buy from someone on this site rather than Ebay.
Thanks,
Dan

Although Pricey, I like the fit of the AMD panels the best..ESPECIALLY, when it's something as big and important as the roof...

So I guess you had some fitting issues with the Columbia stuff?     I'm an aircraft mechanic not a body man, so I have some skills with aircraft aluminun not auto steel.  Don't want something that will be difficult for a newbie.
Thanks Cooter.

If I cant fix it, it's broke

Yes, it's just like anything else. You get a "china" Quarter panel "Skin", go to install it, NONE of the body lines look even half right, for $200.00 less than you coulda bought the $700.00 FULL quarter.. Install it once and been done with it instead of filler work for two months to get the China one right..

I'm installing my AMD roof skin right now. Fits great except I wish the lips that fit into the drip rails were larger. They are very short for plug welding. I think I will use metal bonding adhesive instead in this area. Also you will need to dolly the drip rail edge a bit to get the right angle. I would recommend new drip rails if the roof is shot. My new drip rails took some "adjustment" to fit with the new skin. Trial fit the Chrome trim and the weatherstrip channel before welding.

I've had good purchases from Elite Custom, E-body products and Dave's (Roseville) on this site. All have treated me fair and with good service for various products.

Best to use Dave at Roseville.   Lots of people can sell you parts at a discount, but he's a site sponsor and gives a ton of good advice.  By far one of the better guys to deal with in the industry.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

Cooter,

Good luck with the install, regardless of which top you decide to go with.  Be sure to support the body before cutting the roof off.
