Two more idiots off the road!
« on: November 27, 2010 - 12:38:00 PM »
A couple of idiots were racing up Mount Seymour in North Vancouver.  This is a winding mountain road with lots of blind corners and crossed by hiking and horse trails, as well as narrowly missing a mother who was walking with her two children.  They passed an RCMP officer who made a radio call and there were RCMP members waiting for them in the parking lot at the top of the mountain!  :nono:

Now, what makes this whole thing out of the ordinary was the speed they were driving and the cars they were using.  Over 120 Mph (in a 40 Mph zone) and they were driving a 2008 Ferrari 430 Scuderia and a 2008 BMW M6! :money:

Guess what?

New laws in BC regarding speeding so these drivers were fined over $400each,  AND THEIR CARS WERE SEIZED AND SOLD!!!  :roflsmiley: :roflsmiley: :roflsmiley: :roflsmiley:

The Ferrari is owned in part by a relative of the person driving at the time. That relative will receive 50 percent of the proceeds from the sale, while the other owner receives 30 percent. The government is going to hold on to the rest. The owner of the M6 also receives 30 percent but the government keeps the other 70. The reason for the payouts? To clear notes on each car with the owners respective banks.

While I don't condone wreckless driving/speeding, this punishment seems excessive.

We need to keep government out of our pockets.  Seems like another indirect tax.

Now if the money were used to pay for victims, that might be acceptable.  But we all know big brother doesn't use funds wisely.

Ya those two were idiots, careless, just plain dumb! But I can't say I agree with this new trend of the government taking someones personal property. Between huge fines and impounding your car ( huge money to get it back) and especially when their insurance companies get wind of it all, they will see their insurance rates go x5 at least. I'm all for suspending a license for a year or two, fines etc( I drive on the roads too as well as my family/loved ones).... BUT this trend with the government seizing personal property is a slippery slope! Look at the "street racing" laws in Ohio. Where does it end? Where is the line? So you rev up your engine to clear out the carb and you could get nailed with street racing and "they" take ( steal) your car? Or down the road the old cars are considered an environmental issue so a tow truck shows up at your house and STEALS your prized car? Think about it! REALLY THINK about it!
Wake up folks! This is how it starts,  the "government" widens the crack in the "armour" under the disguise of "they deserve it" the majority of the people don't push back because they are thinking with there emotions instead of logic.  Next thing ya know socialists/communists have a foot hold, and down the slippery slope we go...... history shows what happens next.
This "liberal" ideology, or "liberal social engineering" that seems to be prevalent all around me drives me nuts! I'm sorry to say , but IMO people are like sheep, to stupid to do there own thinking.  The government tells them how/what to think and it seems to me the majority of the sheep follow along.
It doesn't matter what party is elected they ALL need to have a leash on them, the government AND the people need to realize it's the PEOPLE that are in charge NOT the government. When that gets hazy look out! The minute your "trust" any government ......look out your in trouble! They are like a dog, support them care for them etc.... but ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS, keep them on a leash and make sure THEY know who is in charge!
I might not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but I'm not a "sheep" either!

On the other side of the coin, Street Racing Causing Death when you hit a pedestrian, isn't a good thing.
Been more than a few cases lately in Toronto, Edmonton, Saskatoon, to name a few.
That's time in the "Big House". Lawsuits. Wrecked Families.

Oh I agree ! That's called manslaughter. We already have laws to deal with that. Street racing is selfish, careless, and just plain dumb. But who hasn't done it?
Around here they won't give zoning to build a drag strip. Over the years we have had a few people step up really to spend the money to build one but it seems it's politically incorrect?

Just imagine if this happened in southern California, both cars would have been sent to the crusher.

When doing 3 times the speed limit (120 in a 40), I don't see this as excessive punishment.  They should consider themselves lucky that they are getting any of the money from the resale of their cars.  They should loose their cars and still be accountable for paying off the leins/loans if any.   :2cents:

Regardless of how you look at it, that's outright STEALING. That's like me walking up to you, saying hey you were going too fast, and taking your car and selling it. Now that isn't right, is it? What makes it right when the government does it?

Before you know it, ANY speeding will result in seizure and sale. It's not ok. Stealing is stealing, no matter who is doing it.

I was speeding in my minivan earlier today.  Come steal it, we're due for another anyways!!!    :poopoke:

What makes it right is that it's the long arm of the law doing it.  Isn't it the government's (city, county, state federal, etc...) responsibility to uphold the law and punish those who can not obey those rules.  I'm sure the punishment would have been much less severe if they were going 20-30 mph over the posted speed limit vs. the 80 over they were.  The punishment fits the crime, if people are going to drive recklessly (as they were clearly doing), their means to drive recklessly should be taken away. You asked how the gov't can justify it, well there you go!  They do it with other crimes, why not wreckless driving.

What does our goverment do to those who commit crimes with guns?  Ban them from ever owning a gun.  Pedophiles are not allowed to make contact with children.  Since cutting off the hands and feet of those reckless drives would be considered in-humane, I think taking their cars is the next best thing!

Problem is this has nothing to do with punishment.  It's clearly a way to generate revenue.

The next step is to gradually reduce the limits they set to confiscate your car.  Maybe they will take your minivan in the long run.

If their dumbass decides to race at over 120 MPH in "daddy's" new toy, they deserve full and well to pay out the ass...Finally, strike one for the good guys....Only thing that woulda been cooler was if someone posted a vid on You Tube of them two crying and moaning about how "unfair" this was....It's obvious to me that these two didn't deserve thos cars anyway, so let some law abiding citizen have 'em that can drive the speed limit..

This has been known here for years..You can run 120 MPH up the road, but guess what? You'll lose your ride if you are caught....

I would have dropped my car right off that mountain.  Not stealing my property.

This is quite the debate here.

Throw them in jail, fine the crap outta them, suspend their license but don't take their personal property.  Thats just plain wrong and I don't see how it is even legal.  I am 100% with Brad on this. Next thing you know they will be taking your house for certain infractions.

Take their car?  No Take their license?  Sure.

The laws in my state may have changed thru the years but when I was nailed for drag racing over 20 years ago it wasn't uncommon (if found guilty) for the vehicles to be seized by the state. Fortunately my ride wasn't confiscated. This is Virginia I am talking about. At the time it was enforced (and still is to my knowledge), folks knew the risk when they decided to "line up". I agree though, I think the arm of the law can be extreme.

The wallet is the only place to hit these guys where it hurts them.

Fine them....hundreds or thousands of dollars don't matter in a city where the AVERAGE house price is over one million dollars.
Take away their license....they drive without one, as any cop can tell you.
Jack up insurance rates....just drive without it, who can tell?
Jail them.....they get out again and drive home.
(Heck, we can'y even deport them when they kill while street racing!)

All those are already penalties for this jackass behavior, I hope you don't disapprove of them.

Taking away their $230 000 car is the only thing that will stop them (temporarily).  It is a big hit in the wallet.
