A833 wont go into reverse.
« on: November 27, 2010 - 07:44:26 PM »
I know i put something together wrong but dont know what.

Replaced the detent ball on the reverse shifter and now it dosent go into reverse. All the other gears engage fine.
Tried turning it without the shift rod installed and i can feel it bang into something.

It would be nice to know what to look for once i have it open again.

Make sure you didn't get the 1st/2nd shift fork (Thos odd looking one that is off center), in backwards as the reverse internal linkage will hit it if it's in backwards not allowing reverse to engage..

Thanks!

once i was in there i looked right at that shift fork.

Turns out it was a combination of the cover being off center so the 1/2 shift fork was not allowing the reverse fork to slide back.

the rear bolt on the cover has a double deep shoulder to locate the cover on the trans case

I was going to ask if you had the side cover bolts in the correct holes to locate the cover. I had the same problem on my 833. Funny how something that seems so insignificant can make such a huge difference.
