The absolutely most reliable ignition system?
« on: December 02, 2010 - 12:33:41 AM »
If your life depended on your ignition system and performance was not an issue, what system would you use?

In my opinion, the most reliable (by reliable, I'm talking about one that won't leave you stranded) system would have to be one without the mopar ECU, and preferably the fewer electronics the better. What do you think? My vote is an  original dual-point.

I can remember setting the points on my 69 340 Dart with a flashlight and a matchbook cover. Most reliable car I ever had.

Points are reliable
for servicability I use the Mopar ECU / Chrome box not orange & carry a spare , the GM module may work well too , parts would be simple to get & easily swapped
 anything man made will fail

I've had my MSD 6A that I bought second hand for about five years now. Never had an ignition hiccup. Certainly would get another box, probably go digital control and not look back

The GM type HEI chip is far more reliable than all the rest no matter what anyone will tell you. Fit it alongside any electronic distributor and forget it for the life of the car. Use a 12v coil and no ballast resistor. Great spark up to 7000rpm with the good quality aftermarket modules.

Run the stock Chrysler distributor and wire it to the MSD box and forget it..The only time MSD gives a problem is usually, when idiots hook it up incorrectly and burn the box up, or the car is welded on with the battery hooked up....

Is there any way to get a stock looking electronic distributer?
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

Yes. You can do a points conversion inside a stock distributor. There are kits to do this.

I know dozens of people that have had them break. You can also forget about accurate timing.

Chryc

Thanks for the feedback, but your set up maybe a liitle too exotic for me.   Im looking for more more of a "one stop" shop, direct bolt on using my stock intake with no mods, hence the direct bolt on, FAST type set up

Going back to my original post, any input from folks now using the FAST, or other type bolt on EFI kits around the $2000 range is appreciated

When my life depends on it I run the factory single point. As in my plow truck, because I am responsible for a shared driveway with a retire woman for a neighbor and if the driveway's not passable you can't reach eitehr of our houses.

That being said, I've had no troubles with MSD or factory ECUs, but the single point will start/run if the battery is almost dead, the others will not.

One of the few advantages of a '72, at least it has electronic ignition.  :D

Here's a nice little article on electronic ignition conversion: http://www.allpar.com/mopar/nopoints.html

The Mopar Electronic Ign is the way to go....Gm and Ford only wish they had our systems on their cars...That's where MSD came into play in the first place  :2cents:

I guess I've been bit too many times by failed mopar ecu's. What systems would also eliminate the ballast resistor?

I refer you to my earlier post. The HEI modual. A $25 part for a complete and powerful ignition system.
