New Passon 5 Speed

I really like the idea of this. The price might seem hefty at first glance, but such a 'box has its benefits.

In a simple sense, it's plug & play. Take your old box out, chuck the Passon in - drive away.

The biggest factor is no cutting/welding - but it goes beyond that. Firstly, whist we'd all like to think we're handy with the tools, truth be told, most of us don't have either the skill-set or space (or both) to pull off such a job, which means it has to farmed out, which = $$$$$.

OK, so 99.97659% of us don't have uber-rare #'s matching Hemi's, but chopping into a average car still has it's dilemmas. You still have to strip part of the interior (front carpet, console & seats), to do the job - that takes time, and in the hands of a professional, time costs money. Then what? Do you just patch it up, chuck some primer over it, and leave it as is? Plenty of folks would do just that, but think of all those that just had a full body re-spray - I don't care what kind of car you have, not having to cut up something you just spent a butt-load of time & money on is a bonus & a half.

By this time, that initial extra $ of the Passon is starting to look pretty damn good - so long as their quality, warranty & customer service are on point - I'd say it's definitely worth a look at.

Another reason for the higher price:  low volume sales.

These are specifically tailored for Mopars.  it's not a one-size, fits all Tremec that also fits Fords and Chevys.

Sux that the economy is so crap right now; otherwise there'd be more volume and then possibily, lower costs.

I'm not overly enthused with the performance of the TKO. A Viper 6 or the new Mcloed unit were my next choices. Hadn't considered the passion. Interesting read,Thanks.

I prefer the manual trans. for the type of driving I do. Cutting the hump isn't a big deal when you have a welder. The tko is a box though. I agree. 800 decrease in value due to a cut hump? Ehhh,I'm not so sure about that.But I hear ya'. R/T

I'm one of those Joes that does not have the time or tools to cut up my car and fit in a generic one size doesn't fit all Tremec or whatever, so the extra cost for the Passon would way more than offset the shop costs and headaches with trying to put in something that was not meant to go in.  If and when I have the $$$ for one, I will be knocking on their door.

NOT trying to sell you on anything but personally I think it gives a sense of control/empowerment.
My cars an auto but I dream of a 5-speed....All my other pet cars have been straight shifts.

I'm with you. Driving an auto sucks - makes you feel like you're just a dummy along for the ride. I feel much more comfortable and in control with a manual.

A good point has been brought up. I tend to forget that most people don't have access to the tools and equipment that I do and can't modify their cars without sending them to a shop to me done, so having a completely bolt in replacement for an 18 spline is cheaper for most. I hate the argument though that my time is worth something, and the reason is I love working on these cars and wouldn't be sending the work out to a shop, so the time spent working on my car is just time spent on a hobby.

It would be great if I did have the time and tools to do the work myself, but I think I'm in the same boat with a lot of other people where my time is worth something.  I do contract work as a 3rd party on pretty much every job, where we charge by the hour, so if I'm not working, I'm not making money.  Therefore, I can't devote time to my car because I would be taking money out of my own pocket by not working.

So out of curiosity, where did the price given for the Passon unit come from?  I checked their website and could not find anything about it.  Is this price in stone, or could it still come down a bit once production starts?

Quick question - those doing the auto-to-manual conversion using this new Passon 'box will still need to install a 4-speed hump anyway, right?

Yep.....just like putting an OE 4-speed

Has anyone heard about a credit or discount if you send in a working 4 speed that you might be swapping the 5 speed with?  If I do this it will be to replace the 4 speed I currently have in my car.

Also, I have read that the new 5 speed will have an 18 spline shaft.  I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to transmissions, so what other parts/mods would I need to make since my current setup is a 23 spline?

Just the clutch plate is different I think.

Could some one please whine about the price?? It's very entertaining.

If you have a 23 spline trans in your car now all you have to do is have the hub on the disc changed over from 23 spline to 18 spline.  Jamie & I have been discussing that and he will be able to provide that service for you. Obviously any clutch disc that does not pass muster will not be converted.

I will be torture testing the new trans.
