Tech Question about engine preferences
« on: June 07, 2002 - 12:55:19 PM »
Although I am very experienced with mechanics, especially Mopars,  I am new to and very inexperienced in racing so here is my dumb question... :-[
Why is it that I never see and 400s out on the strip?  Lots of 340s, 360s, 440s and of course, the holy grail, the 426.  I've even seen 273s and 225s.  What is it about the 400 that is so undesireable in a drag car? ???

That's kind of odd, because about a year ago I sold most of the engines I had laying around (12 altogether) 3 of them were 400's and the went before any of the 383's & 440's.thay were all building stroker motors.I sold them all in about a month except for 2 383"s so far.I had to to help finance the HEMI build some how.

Must be an Idaho thing then...   I was wondering cuz when I was a teenager, I had a '72 Charger with a 400 in it and if it wasnt for the fact that I am the son of a state cop, I would have gotten more tickets than warnings. ::)  It was too d**n hot a car for a 16yo boy in farm country ;D
Now that I am starting to get involved with organized racing I noticed the absence of 400s and I think about my old charger a lot. :'(
And Yes, I am d**ned sorry that I sold that car...  But at least I still have my 66 barracuda from when I was 15. :)

It may be that there just weren't as many 400's produced. 72 - 78
It's just basically a bored out 383.

A 400 is just a 383 w/ bigger pistons & lower compression.  This was because of the down grading of gas at that time, & changing emissions requirements.  Also, the 400 has an EGR valve that the 383 did not have.   All it takes to wake up a 400 is a little more compression, & a little more timing.  Emissions requirements mandated lower timing in most all motors to meet hydrocarbon emissions standards.  400's are actually preferable when building a stroker motor, because it has the biggest bore of any stock Chrysler engine.
