Totally understand what you are saying.
In a properly set up car there is no room in the wheel wells for a wider or taller tire wheel combination. Based on my experience - which is lots - this is the most optimum set up for the road or the road course for these cars. A bigger stick is not necessarily better.   When the sidewall gets too short the car rides like a brick and does not handle significantly better when put to the test. 26 inches tall of tire is all you need to fill the wheel wells and work in harmony with your suspension.  However I am not going to write an essay about it so I'm done.


They only offer one street tire in that 255/50/16 size currently. Nice that it’s an affordable one. But the other 5 tires are race tires. I went through this with my 245/50/15 BFG comp T/A's years ago. And now nobody makes a street tire in that size.

They do make 12 street tires in the 245/50/16 size. Was that an OE tire on some vehicle they made a lot of? That seems to be the key to keeping a tire size alive. That tire size seems to have a brighter future.

There are other fast road course cars running different wheel tire combos. Tim Werner's 68 Valiant runs 17x9 rim with 275/40/17 tires.  That allows him to run 13” rotors and also move the rim inwards for tire clearance.

The 275/40/17 is 40 series, but it's wider so the sidewall is taller. Only 1/2" shorter than those 16" tire. Still I agree with you Tom, a pretty short side wall, especially for us running big torsion bars. But you pick up a 3/4” of additional rubber on the road on each tire. And they offer a ton of tires in that size. What to do… :pullinghair:

And I agree than the 18”-19” rims with 225-245 wide tires with 30 or 40 series rubber is not optimum for performance.  And the larger/heavier rims wear bearings, shocks, and decrease braking performance (brakes being equal).

I have such a negative feeling against BFG TA/s that I have kinda ignored the g-force tires.  But, in a 255/50, this is about it.

We are talking street driven  E bodies  that might get driven on the track in your dreams.  I drive an E body on the road course that is a street car.  If it was a track car only it would still have the 16x8's but with no tread competition tires.  I have both the BFGs and the comp tires with tread. 255-50-16.  How many tires do you need to choose from??? UTQG ratings are part of the criteria and the BFG fits the bill.

1. There are many different ways to set up an E-body for both the street and the track. All of them require compromise, and while some are better than others, its not like there is one right answer.

2. Not everyone likes the same brand/model of tires, so giving a single option like the BFG G-forces (or BFG's in general) isn't a catch all. I might add, that the 255/50/16 G forces are currently on back-order nearly everywhere, including Tire Rack.

3. You're not the only person on this site that has driven an E-body over 130 mph. Or the only person that road tracks their cars. While you offer sound advice, you can't be upset that not everyone wants to follow it. Opinions are like, well, you know. And everyone has one.

The recipe for road-handling E-bodies was written a long time ago with TransAm and Nascar racing. But there are a lot of technologies and options available now that didn't exist then, so reciting the 1.24" torsion bars with re-indexed anchors, solid sway bars, 120 lb leafs and 16x8 in wheels mantra doesn't cut it by itself anymore. That's what was done because that's the best that was available at the time, or what the rules dictated. That doesn't make it the best now.

And regardless, I don't think that's what this thread was even about to begin with. The original poster made no mention of racing of any kind, just asked an opinion about a certain type of rim. Even if 16x8 was the world's most optimal rim size and the 255/50/16 BFG the world's greatest tire, it doesn't mean that everyone would want to run them. Some people will want to run the biggest tire they can physically fit in the wheel well because they think it looks cool, others will want to be able to buy their tires at Costco, etc etc. Doesn't make it right or wrong. I think 14" rims look ridiculous, and the same for anything bigger than 18", but I'm not going to lose my patience because someone wants to put them on their car.

And that's the reason why I'm running 17x9s rather than 16x10s...  I can pick up a set of slightly used 275/40ZR17s (from the guys that MUST HAVE new rubber) for cheap here.

245/50r16 was used for YEARS on 'stangs and 'maros.  So yeah, the 16" is still an option on the table.  But 90% just street drive, so if they choose 17" they aren't going to spontaneously combust en masse...

Drink the kool-aid... It's Tasty!

but really, that basic setup is still the base model for t-bar handling, there's a couple tweaks, but its still pretty relevent and a good starting point.

I just found the picture on the Internet, so I don't know anything about the yellow cuda itself. But this photo has certainly inspired me to consider the Magnums for my car as that is exactly the theme I've gone for on mine: a classic, yet slightly modernized appearance.

Just came across this, but v48 16x8 and g-force 245/255 50VR16 tires are what I'm running now.

And while they look cool, the tire selection does suck. The only mass-market car that runs that 255 was the 84-87 vette. GM used the 245 on about 10 different models (IROC, Trans AM, GTP, etc. through into the early 90s), and it was popular on other cars too, resulting in a lot more choice. I actually found my 255 on Kijiji, ordered for vette then not picked up.

I have some Simmons 18"x 8.5" that I'm going to try this summer, with 255/45/18 up front. Lots of choices for that size. Liking those AR500s too.  :)

Whatever rim you do choose, get the tallest tire you can clear. Too short of a tire is the biggest downfall to making a new wheel look "right" on an old car.  I split mine and went with a 28.5" tall rear tire with 18s and have 17s up front with a 26" tall tire. The 1" smaller rim up front helps the look and I think I'd try to squeak a 255/50 (27" tall) with a little deeper backspace on it next time.
