Carrier: What do I have?
« on: December 15, 2010 - 08:41:39 AM »
I posted this in WIW section but this is probably the proper place for it:

Not sure exactly what I have here... There are no obvious casting numbers for IDing.  Does anyone know what it is and what it is worth?

It does have a 3.00 stamped on the ID plate at the back.  And it looks like a "V" inside of a C shape along the snout (maybe 1/2" tall).

Well it looks like a race piece , the carrier has no identifing marks & could eb from the 50s , clutch sure grip , you might be able to figure some out using the part # from the ring gear

Chryco,

Thanks for the help!  I suspected, but wasn't sure... It is definitely a 3.00 ratio using the simple turn test.

The ring gear is stamped with what appears to be the following:

2467450 P3 00 S291 1 68 N1X

Directly behind the ring gear (but not the gear itself) it is stamped with:

33712

There are other stampings all over it, but those are the ones near the gear.

Any ideas?

Jon

My first guess was that it was a race piece too.  The fitting that's plumbed into the side I'm sure is for a rear end cooler.  3.00 gear would be good for top end speed on a larger track.

Thing is, from 1958 (First Sure Grip unit), the 8 3/4 chunks all look identical from the outside..I think this one is from 1958-1961 personally..

It may have course spline axles. 62 or so and down were like 10 spline.  thin ring gears too

My eyes were getting crossed trying to count, but it appears to be roughly 32 spline (?).  It's definitely not 10.

I don't know if that helps or makes things more confusing...

I also noticed today that on the ID tag for the gear ratio it is stamped "R" right after the "3.00" stamping.

I know that Suregrips usually had the "S" stamp.  Doesn't anyone know what R is?

I honestly do not have a clue what the R or the carrier is from , definatly for racing with the cooler fitting , 3.00 is an odd ratio too , the side gears are usually 30 spline
sure grip is usually a seperate tag , R could be a race designation

I'll claim ignorance here... but the fitting for the cooler is kicked toward the rear of the car.  Where would it have been mounted?  Is there any chance this is just some type of breather?  The fitting is just slightly higher than the fill plug...

Is there anything else I could do or provide that might help identify this further?  How about an actual spline count?  There are other stampings on the gears and INSIDE the carrier.  Maybe I could take some close up pictures of those?

I'm really curious to learn more about this.  I guess measuring the pinion gear shaft diameter would tell us a bit more as well... yes?

the spline count means nothing , the #s on the gears & the pinion diameter would help

Is the broadcast sheet in the seat for one of your cars or from a parts car? Have you checked those other seats for more yet?

By chance the new Mopar Collectors Guide came a couple of days ago & they have an article on a couple of mystery chunks that do have part numbers but are completely unknown as to their origin.  They are beefed up versions & speculation is they were special pieces produced prior to '64 (pre-Dana) for stock car racing.....You just might have something very special there.
