By chance the new Mopar Collectors Guide came a couple of days ago & they have an article on a couple of mystery chunks that do have part numbers but are completely unknown as to their origin.  They are beefed up versions & speculation is they were special pieces produced prior to '64 (pre-Dana) for stock car racing.....You just might have something very special there.
I was just thinking about that article too! I'm guesing it was either for Nascar or the trans-am series because who else would need a cooler fitting? Drag racers didn't back in the day?

well, it looks like my 62 model truck chunk to me, minus the aftermarket an filler tube there. Mine didn't have any numbers either, but it had course spline axles too, as yours didnt

The hard part for me is that I have to rely on the Chunk to tell me anything.

This was dug out of Billy West's place in North Carolina.  I have no clue what vehicle it came out of.  It was sitting on the floor in the office with a bunch of other chunks.

Alaskan,

Good suggestion.  I send an email with a link to this thread to Cass this afternoon.  Maybe he will have a better idea of what I have here.

Thanks,

Jon

Here was Cass's final verdict:

Quote
Looks like a 742 case with no casting number.  I have seen 741 cases without numbers, but that is the first blank 742 I've seen.

It also has a vintage Detroit Locker installed, so it is probably an old circle track third-member.

I have an old Richard Petty third-member with 3.42 gears that that looks very similar, but it still has the casting number on the side.

Thanks,

Cass
