how to tell an ebody trans?

is there an easy way to determine if an A833 trans is an e body?
often times you have to make a quick decision and go by what the seller tells you.  trying to find one for my conversion.

The easiest way to tell is that E body transmissions will have 2 shift pad mounting locations. They also use a longer tailshaft, but that's easier to tell if you can compare them to a short tailshaft unit.

ok, but the later (after '75) look identical in pictures or descriptions, but they have the overdrive and larger retainer, which is not what I am looking for.

This is pretty easy too. If it has an aluminum main case, its an OD transmission. The other dead give away is the front bearing retainer. The 833OD uses a 5.25" diameter bearing retainer, which is larger than the regular 833's.

An e body 833 will have a cast iron main case and 2 shift pad mounting locations.

Some of the later A833 non OD trans had the larger front bearing. Aluminum case usually identifies the OD, if rear extension housing has 2 pads and the rear one is taped & threaded it will fit the E body even if it came out of something else but you will need to buy the correct length levers and mounting bracket if the front pad was used as it won't bolt up to the rear one.

For the most part yes, the bell housing is the only difference between the A and B/RB/H engines. The A833 gearbox can be the same for both the A and B/RB/H engines. Some weren't, as some of the B/RB/H A833 transmissions were 18 spline. But a lot of them weren't, they were the same 23 spline A833 that the A engines got.

the 11" clutch is confusing
there are 2 belhousings & flywheels , the larger is 143 tooth , the smaller is 130 tooth
 either can use the 23 or 18 spline disc as long as you spec the correct disc when ordering , the bolt pattern is different between the 143 & 130 tooth so the clutch is specific , both use the same 11" disc though
 the b & rb engine use the same belhousing

will a 23 spile hold up to a high hp engine ? the 18 is a little hard to come by.
