Challenger sail boards
« on: December 17, 2010 - 09:43:37 AM »
I don't even remember removing the origonal ones so I don't know how they are held in place.  I have new ones from REM and they are just pieces of carboard with no attaching hardware.  How do these attach?

I also have a new REM package tray that didn't come with any attaching clips like the factory ones had.  Did the origonal sail boards use some type of built-in clip?  Any pictures would be helpfull.  Thanks

Other than the dome light wiring and the backing plates for the shoulder belt holders, is there anything else that needs to be installed before the headliner goes in?

I have seen sail boards relative to some earlier model headliners but my '73 did not come with any.

The sail boards rest on the metal bracket which your headliner clips to. You should also have holes for metal clips whick push into the car roof frame to hold them.

I don't remember removing any but everyone I talked to said all Challengers would have come with them.  So Wade, are you saying that if you push on the headliner in the area between the back glass and the side windows, you will feel all the holes in the roof structure?

Anyone else with a 73 or 74 that can confirm NO sail boards?  73-74 used a cloth headliner so maybe it wasn't needed with that material?

HemiOrange70...do you have a pic of what you are talking about?

The clips are the same as the door panel clips

Thanks for that pic.

I suppose I can still use the ones I have even though the car may not have come with any.  It looks like just one clip holds it one...then taped over.

I'm also sending you a PM.

My car came with no board in or out, you would have to push pretty hard to feel the metal
...what I have seen referred to a sail boards were covered & went on the outside.

The Cuda ones get covered and are visable.  I know the earlier Challengers had the board behind the headliner.  Like I said, I don't remember removing any but that was a long time ago.

My '73 did not have boards either. Or they deteriorated to the point that you couldn't tell anything had been there.  :2cents:

I just heard from someone over on Moparts.  His 73 didn't have them either.  I'm curious what year they stopped using them.  Do 72's have them?  If they do, it might be due to the different headliner material used in 73 and 74.

My headliner was the ribbed type rather than the perforated type if that helps?

My 74 did not have any boards, and the REM ones I received with the headliner were not the correct shape...they would not fit anyhow.
So I did not install the boards, the attached photo shows the finished result...looks good to me.

They're just hard dark gray cardboard.  The headliner is meant to cover it completley.  It isn't visable once the headliner is on.  Since the SE uses a molded headliner, I don't know if it even uses these.
