More than likely a stupid question
« on: December 17, 2010 - 03:43:08 PM »
I've been looking at other guys' cudas and challengers, and I've noticed that some (but not all) of them have a tube in the trunk that runs from the interior over the passenger side wheel well and through the trunk pan. What is this tube for? My cuda has both a hole into the cabin and a hole in the trunk pan to accomidate, but no tube, and I have no idea what it's for. It is an a/c car if that matters (my gut's telling me that has something to do with it). Someone please enlighten me.

Cudas have a tube only in the trunk that runs thru the trunk floor and just ends, right behind the wheel well...its where all the vent tubes for the tank terminate....the filler tube in a cuda is behind the license plate.

On a challenger, the filler tube goes thru the top of the rear fender and runs to the tank....not sure how the vent tubes are set up....

As to the hole in the cabin you refer to??    :dunno:

Challenger pan was my first thought, too. But then I started looking at pictures and the fuel filler hole is more in the center (like your picture, HemiOrange70). The hole I'm talking about is just aft the wheel well. I'm sure it's for that tube that runs along the wheel well, but I don't know what it's for or how important it is. The hole that goes into the cabin (second picture) is only a guess that it's related. I just assumed that's where the tube coems from or leads to. Thanks for all the input too, by the way.

That is the Evaporative Emmission Control (EEC) riser tube.  This was part of the early original gas tank gasses trapping methods that the feds started employing back in the day.  It is connected to the gas tank with usually four or five hoses and traps the gasses coming from the gas tank.

Some guys just eliminate them but it was original eguipment.  Depending what type of intake you convert to or remain with this may be a useless thing to keep.

The hole in the cabin is unrelated to anything.  It's simply a hole in a bracket.

I think it was also a california option for 70 models, but may have been used elsewhere in the country as well.  All later 71-74 models have this system.

The bigass trunk tube like you have in the pic is found on 70 cars with CA emissions and all 71's & early 72's(maybe all 72's?). 73-74 have a totally different vapor system.

70 Challengers have a small (1/4") tube that runs from a vent hole at the high end of the filler tube, through a plate over that same floor hole, into a hole in the right frame rail. The tube is vented and the cap is not.

I'm sure cudas have something similar, but I don't recall exactly what it looks like.
My name is Steve and I'm addicted to Challengers...
