ignition module problems
« on: December 18, 2010 - 03:28:59 PM »
hi, i have a 72 barracuda with a 440 4 speed. the car was never running right and i put my old approx 25 year old mopar orange ignition module that i had from my 1970 roadrunner.the backside of the old orange mopar module once started to goo so i replaced it years ago. i tried putting it in my 72 cuda and it now runs good. i dont want it to start gooing onto the firewall so i bought  replacement ignition modules from advance, pep boys and oriellleys.some wouldnt allow car to run others the car would run good for a few minutes than start running like crap.i put the old trusty orange one back in to the cuda and it runs good again. it doesnt make sense how an old module works fine and new replacements dont. any suggestions, thanks

the new ones are made in china these days and not as good,,might find a good one in 10..and replace the ballast for good measure,,they make some different set ups these days like a stand alone distributor and it does away with the box all together,,I used a gm module on mine $20 and a few wires and did away with the orange box and ballast all together,,left the box in place for the look only,,or you can get a pricy msd box

i am going to put the new crappy module in my 70 roadrunner when i get a chance just to see how it acts in that car.if it runs crappy like when it was in the cuda i will know for sure its just bad parts. its just crazy that 5 new modules dont work in my cuda but the old orange one does, thanks

Got my vote
I've converted all my cars to this module.
Cheaper, better, more reliable and easy to fit up.
What more could you want?

In the challenger I mounted mine inside a hollowed out orange box for originality looks.

I used a Bosch BIM024 module which is the favourite over here but i am lead to believe the genuine GM module (I think the part no. is IM 113 but i'll check and confirm) is a better quality unit.

There is discussion and wiring diagrams in these threads. Go for it!!!

its a good set up and I  would recommend useing the msd blaster coil that is in the picture and when u install this setup regap your plugs to .045 as it fires hotter and u dont want to take a chance on burning a piston

An GM HEI module has four terminals - two at each and - that should be labeled C and B on one end, and W and G on the other end, with G being the "smaller" size terminal.

    * C = Coil (negative side)
    * B = Battery (positive side of the coil, or any appropriate power source that is live in ignition and start)
    * W = positive lead (+) from the pickup in the distributor
    * G = negative lead (-) from the pickup in the distributor

also these pages will help as one shows a picture of useing the ballast wires and how to bypass

and this page has good info

Any 12v coil will work.
Wires to ballast resistor get joined.
