Help - Cuda held hostage!!!!
« on: November 22, 2004 - 10:13:29 AM »
Well, not many things go smoothly. Bro's cuda vert was about to be finish painted when my brother gets an invoice for..

wait, taking a breath.. SEVENTY FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS === $75k.. no kidding. :burn: :puke: :fire:    :gripe: :fire:

Short of it is.. he's a new Macco franchise who wanted to get a name for himself doing older cars. The org quote was for $5500 for body and paint. The car need more rust repair than forseen.. so my brother gave him two more payments of 5k.. totalling 15k. Keep- in mind a re4vised quote was never re-worked. The car has been there approx 8 months.. we didn't see any real progress through the first 4 months.. seriously.

Just to give yoiu an idea on how over the top this guy is.. here's some #'s off the 3 page invoice. btw - owner said he just recently sat down with the guy working on the cuda. They went through every reto pic/stage of the cuda & "estimated" hours it took each step..

just for kicks.. @ a shop rate of 45/hr

These are not in chronological order, but some of my favorites..  :spank:

remove and install new gas tank = 60 hrs
finish sanding = 300 hours
cut out front & partial rear floor = 65 hrs (NO LIE!!!)
weld new floor pan in = 60 hrs
seal floor pan = 25 hrs
Sand fix deck lid = 45 hrs (there was nothing wrong w/ the deck lid.. nothing (just 3 layers of paaint)
weld in fram connectors = 30 hrs
connector to torsion bar = 26 hrs (thought they were the same??)
chemically remove old paint (100 hrs  ??????????????????????????????????)

..list goes on & on. He says they have 1100 hourss in the car, which = 49k. That would mean he had to have someone working on the car fulltime for 7 months..., BULLSH!T

Oh, my brother paid for all parts on the car, yet he lists supplies @ 9800. Paint.. cost just to shoot the car is 10,200. My brother told him do NOT PAINT the car..... "DO NOT TOUCH THE CUDA, until further advised" He wants to paint the car to use it as his poster child.. NO WAY he finishes the car. My brother said he's got to be insane!!

Any who, my brother is talking w/ an attorney who looked at the invoice & already said it looks like consumer fraud at best. vWe would like to get the car out of there, but we'll have to hear what the lawyer says. Un-friggin-believable. Worst part is the guy seemed really nice & friendly, but I told my brother to get a price.. & my brother just trusted him. The guy said.. you will be getting such a deal.. I prob won't make any $$ of this car.

Gonna sue his Arse for fraud. I hope lawyer gets an injunction & shuts down his shop til this is settled. Get hi8m audited, decertified the whole 9 yards. I already told the lawyer that the guy working on the cuda isn't even on the books.

Thanks, just had to vent.. & it's not even my cuda. Does anyone have any ideeas on this situation. Also, where can I get flat rate body shop inf??

You can tell him that I could remove and install a gas tank in under 3 hours...and I'm a girl  :grinyes:  He might want to start looking for some new help, if it takes that long.

I'm sitting here shaking my head at the utter ridiculousness of this.  Come on....25 hours to put in some seam sealer??   :banghead: :banghead:  Will you please ask the judge if you could have cameras in the courtroom, cause I'd really love to see this one!

see, this asshle says well your car is a great investment.. hey boob, I caqn buy one DONE (CORRECTLY) for that. He's comparing his guys work to that of whast a rotissorie resto would cost. I said that includes drivetrain, suspension and all parts re-chromed, or replaced w/ new or NOS. This guy is totally out to lunch.. it's not legal what i'm thinking.

What if it's a 69 camaro.. same work?????? you charge 75k for chebby> 1/4 of the car is missing to boot.. it's a vert for gods sake!!!. I would say the work they did is prob worth tween 15-20.. painted. He said my shop-s work substantially increases the cars value.. not after you say it came from macco  LMOA, but still p!ssed.   :gripe:

I hope the lawyer jumps on this one & shuts him down. The judge will ask to see any subsequent quotes from the 5500 initial.. i think this guy is totally screwed. just unfortunate that it will go to court. He has NO idea my brother is seeking council.

Have you ever had that feeling in your arse when getting into a fight?? This guy will feel that shortly when he hears from the lawyer for fraud.. unfricken-believable. Not many honest people left who aren't greedy..

angryfish... 6'4 225.. this guy does not want to see me angy...

I think most body shops have what's called a mechanics lien on the car.. so hands are tied. he could drop a washer down the carb,.. anything. Not a good situation. Is there anyway to legally get the car out or have put in a nuetral place.

What should body work with some metal fab cost??

1 new qtr
frame connectors
new trunk floor
front floors
fabricate metak behind hood hinge

i mean this guy nickel & dimed hanging fenders etc..

could this have been done & painted for under 20K??

Im working at a body shop right now. And I know a guy who makes a liveing restoring e-bodys. He said he'd do my qutrs(when i had a cuda) $600 for both. Belive it or not, I worked a Maaco and we  put new qurts. on a 69 camaro. Thay charged him $1,300 for both, and thats not even paint! My friend also said he could do my trunk for $200, and all new floor pans for $400. So if you ask me, Yes. It can be done under $20k. Well hell, if you have a good driver, nothing eye pop'n. But a good cuda. you could go really far with $8,000. Hope I could help.  Bring this guy down  :pissed:

Did this shop do the full restoration, or was it strictly body work?

Before the Cuda I am working on now, I had done some minor body work about 15 years ago and I am doing everything myself to this car that I can to get the body back to tip top shape.  Along the way I have learned a lot, made some mistakes, and had to re-do a few things.  I have replaced a frame rail, trunk floor, floor pans, patched the firewall, and redone part of the rear wheel wells so far.  I still have to patch the lower front fenders, align the doors, fenders, etc... and do the actual finishing work before I can finish painting the car.  Granted, I am not getting the car back to an exact original state and the fact that the work is sometimes pretty darn tough and or frustrating, there is no way I can remotly see how someone would have a good conscience even charging $20,000 let alone $75,000 for body work.  I am not in the body shop business and I might be out of touch with it, but is just my gut feeling.

they did the typical ebaody metal work and body.. They did not pay for any parts, not touch the drivetrain, suspension or rechrome. We were thinking if it came out nice.. 15-20k would be fair.. nothing more. It's not like the car was rotten to the core.

There's no more discussions w/ the owner. He will be contacted within the week on charges of consumer fraud. We need to get the unpainted cuda out of his shop. This cuda may not m,ake it to Carslile  LOL

Anyone know of a "reasonable body shop in NJ.. would like to get my TX9 cuda re-painted late next year.. Thank god it needs no body work except for prep.
