I have a 2nd cousin with a body shop. However, I have never been to the shop, or seen his work. If you want, I can dig up his contact info.

Hey '71 Fish,

I used to live in northern NJ & got hosed by a shop called Past & Present in Closter, NJ. The guy who ran it was named William (Bill) Losse from Fort Lee, NJ. He did crappy work, charged for some things never done, & disappeared. I paid him & need to have the work redone at some point. I was lucky to get the car out of his shop before the Fire Marshall shut the building down.

Anyway, I had a lawyer take the case on contingency who was very good, but the guy had absolutely no assets in his name. I won the case but never collected a penny. The one thing I hope for at times it since it was a judgement for fraud in a civil court, it doesn't expire. I could conceivably collect if assets ever appear in the future. If you want the lawyer's name & number, let me know & I'll give it to you.

I know you said your brother has a lawyer already, but if you need another one, this guy has some Body Shop experience now.

My Cuda is getting gill inserts welded in, quarter patches, patches around the windows, trunk floors, and shot base/clear, bumpers, chrome etc hung for the grand total of $4000.  I supplied the materials.  The car is basically a shell right now as the front clip, doors, and trunk are off.

Totally outrageous!!! In New Hampshire we have a law that states the shop needs approval for the initial estimate and any work costing above 10 % of the original estimate which the customer has to OK.There are also estimate manuals for both mechanical and collision body work which you can use for comparison.Obviuosly resto work is slightly different than collision but it will get you close.I`m sure his lawyer can prove his costs totally unreasonable and also report him to any regulatory agencies and consumer advocate groups to put the screws to him.

Wow!

What can I say that hasn't been said

My 7 yr old could do the gas tank quicker. I could do the metal repalcement in 1/4 the time and have never done it before. This guy needs to get a grip!!
The part that pisses me off(and let's you see what he is trying to do) is him talking about investment value, thats none of his d**n business. If it were a 200K Hemi Cuda, doesn't make the body work any more expensive than a slant six car!!!

If your brother is not resposible for anything above what he last authorized.

Oh, is there a local TV station that does consumer watch type stories on the news?

74chall is right... take a look at my website.. http://mikescuda.net and go under Pictures, Cuda Update's... there's $15K worth of body work and paint there.. the car was a BASKET case when I took it to the shop, now she's an eye catcher and hopefully a show WINNER!! I had all new floor pans, new rear quarters, front fender patch panels, 24 patches INSIDE the front fenders, new torque boxes fabricated, door and fender fixed from being hit and TONS of rust removed!!

I REALLY hope you nail this guy.. he deserves what he's got coming to him!! :grinyes: If I were you, I'd give Neil Bortz a call.. he's based in Atlanta and hosts an AM radio show... AMAZING guy!!! ;) ;)

Give me a few days to get all my bills together from it... and then I'll see what I can put together for ya!! Ed (the owner of the shop) knocked $5K off the final price when I picked her up because I'm doing some advertisement and building him a website... so technically, it's $20K worth of work, but saying $15K makes it look cooler and gives the shop more credit!! :grinyes: :grinyes: :grinyes:

Lemme know if you need anything else!

LB - that would be a big help. Could you pls ask your body shop for flat time rates on the follow:

weld in 1 qtr panel
cut out old, weld & seal front floor pans
cut out old, weld & seal trunk pan & extensions
weld front frame connectors
general body work (no roof!!)
paints stripping etc..

Thanks.. would be a huge help. If you have a fax # I could fax you the invoice & see what your shop would charge etc.

Just my opinion . . . but I think LB's body shop was on the high side when it came to price.   But certainly no where near the bill that 71cuda got!    :eekbig:
