starting problem since switching from auto to 4 spd
« on: December 26, 2010 - 02:04:46 AM »
i just switched my car from automatic to 4 speed and the car wont crank when i turn the key but starts when it put a bump switch right on the starter relay. i have power at the ballast resistor with the key on and the engine off. i read some posts about similar problems and read that a 4 speed grounds differently then a automatic and psycho wrote about grounding the  starter relay from one of the blades to the mounting  bolt on the fender well. i didnt try it yet but is this what i need to do? if so which blade and do i tap into it or leave the connector i remove off? any help would be appreciated.

Where the yellow wire hooks on.
Just ground that one.

for some reason both off my wires are yellow, but i know the one on the bottom right side (if looking from the top) is supposed to be the yellow one, that runs to the switch correct? and the other one is a ground for the trans right? should i tap into the wire and ground it or leave the wire off and just ground the relay?

Leave the wire off and ground the relay.

Here's an auto relay

and a manual relay to show grounding you need to do

If you do not have the switch on the clutch pedal to connect to
the starter relay you need to ground the relay,
just be sure your out of gear when starting.

Photo below shows brown wire labeled "interlock"...that's the one to ground

Make sure that you get the right clutch pedal switch soon. At my friend's car lot, I jumped in a car to start it and roll the windows up. some idiot bypassed the clutch safety switch, so the car lurched forward right into my Challenger's left front fender and smashed it.

Please don't take any chances with your car.
