Criminal? '73 340 Cuda to 71 Cuda Clone
« on: December 28, 2010 - 06:32:47 PM »
Just curious what general opinions are...

I have a '73 340 Cuda that needs a total restoration and is missing a lot.  It does have the fender (well optioned) and VIN tags.  I had planned on restoring it but if you've been following the WTB forum then you know I'd really like to dump it for a 71 project.

I had wanted the 71 project because I really like the styling of that year.  How big of a sin am I creating by cutting up an original 340 73 Cuda to clone to a 71?

Obviously the decision is mine, but I'm curious what everyone else thinks.

Jon

what problem? the general public only sees big block/hemi/dana60 so i personally dont see a problem . WELL unless you are molesting a #s matchinf car then i would say your crazy .
this transformation if followed right  would be a nice up grade for that car in alot of different ways.

Go for it. There is no sin in making what you want. If there was a ton of money at risk with a high dollar numbers matching car then maybe I would think twice about it. At the end of the day all that matters is that you walk in your garage and have a huge smile on your face. I changed almost everything on my car and would not do it any other way.

What I have seen happen to others and myself------ we deny our true passion (a 71 Cuda in your case) and spend A LOT of TIME, MONEY & LABOR cloning our substitute, only to find in the end we are not truly satisfied and wind up taking a loss selling the clone in pursuit of the real thing!

CM,

You kind of touched on what I'm thinking...

I am already working on a 71 Challenger 318 car.  Obviously it is nothing special but it needs a complete and total restoration (all new floors, trunk, extensions, quarters, etc etc).  It is NOT a restoration for the faint of heart but it is MY car.  I'm kind of thinking that if I'm going to do this all over again I'd really like for it to be a car that is actually worth something when I'm done.

At least with my 71 Challenger I can customize it however I want without feeling bad about it.  It's a dime-a-dozen car that I only paid a few hundred bucks for.

Mean Green,

I traded a lot of messages with you last week.  Shoot me a message (PM or email) to let me know what I missed!

I agree 100%.

The money you'll put into restoring a car, not to mention what's needed to modify it to appear a different year model - you might as well cut your losses now, lose the '73, and hunt for an original '71.

It would absolutely suck to dump all that time & money into something at the end of which, you realise you only kinda-sorta wanted.

If you're in a situation that you'll probably only ever get to do it once in your lifetime (ie: not a multimillionaire) - then do it right the first time.

I really hate seeing real `cudas or other true factory muscle cars highly modified when there are plenty of plain 318 cars out there and ya,it`ll never really be a `71.

You asked, don't be offended when I give it to you...

My opinion is, for every one person that tells you "Do what you want", there's 75 that will tell you your crazy to cut up an original car because of how much it's worth...I say this, Unless those folks have some cash waiting to buy that "Desirable" 1973, Low compression, barely able to wear the 340 engine label, big bumpered, bumper guarded, Cuda then, I say do what you like with it...You reallize what is gonna happen to that 1973 Cuda right? You gonna listen to everybody else about how much that car is SUPPOSEDLY worth and you shouldn't "Cut it up", then your gonna be stuck waiting on the ONE PERSON who just has to have THAT car and in this economy, it isn't gonna bring anywhere NEAR what your buddies have told you it will...SO, in the end, you won't have your '71, you won't be able to sell that '73, and you'll be stuck without either.....Don't believe this is true? Well, I dare say go ahead and see what an ORIGINAL 1971, 340, Cuda is listed for right now and you'll see what i mean about the clone thing...A bird in the hand is worth TWO in the bush...The ONLY reason someone is chasing down an original car is 1. they tend to let the "Experts" at the car shows/cruises get to them when asked if it's an "original" car, or 2. They themselves have some sort of reselling issues with buying these Musclecars...If your in this for the car, then build it how YOU want it..If your in it for the money, then, IMO, you've lost the battle before you even begin....

Bypass all this BS and build the car into a 1971. I dare say that an all original 1973 340 car isn't worth what a 1971 CLONE BB Cuda is in the end....

Dime a dozen??? What?  :bricks1:
Sorry, back to your topic.

You're not cutting up a Hemi or 440 six car, and even that has been done. So I say go for it. I got a lot of "You're crazy if you cut that car up" when I made the trailer. And it was just a 318 car. Do what ever you want. It is your car. As you can see I didn't listen to them nay sayers, and I am so glad of that now. I have what I wanted made by my own hand. Just my  :2cents:

The OP wanted opinions so he`s getting them but in the end it`s his car.FWIW I think a nicely restored `72-74 real `cuda is probably pretty close in worth to one made into a `71 clone.
