2 inch Drop spindle clearance issues
« on: December 31, 2010 - 05:33:18 PM »
I was thinking about buying a set of them. Anyone have a set and check them at full jounce and extension for LCA/UCA or U/L BJ interference? Which size/width rims etc.?

I have a set of drop spindles on my car right now. I was almost able to fit a 17x9" rim with 5" of backspace. That rim clears the tie rod by about 1/4", had no issues with the upper ball joint, but hit the UCA at full lock in the back. However, I have CAP uca's on my car. They have a "U" shape, vs the stock "V" shape, so I think that there would be no issues with either a stock UCA or the Hotchkiss or Magnumforce UCA's. The RMS uca's old design was similar to CAP's, but their newer design is narrower.

At any rate, most people don't need a 17x9" rim. A 17x8 with 4.5" of backspace should fit fine. Same for a 15x8", but you may need a flat zerk on the upper ball joint.

So you CAN fit 18x9 rims with alterktion and their new uca?  I'd like to run a 275 on the front and wonder if it's possible.

Also, in order to drop a challenger 2.5", do you have to use drop spindles?

I have a set of 2" dropped spindles on my cuda with 18x8 wheels wrapped in 245/40ZR-18 tires. I don't have any clearance or rubbing issues.

That's cool, but I want at least 255's on the front and 275s if possible.  I also want to run a low ride height so the fender lip is even with the top of the wheel.  A gap above the tire is unacceptable in my book when you have low profile tires.

Anybody know if 255 or 265 on an 8.5" wheel would fit with alterktion?

I am looking at going with the magnum force 2" drop spindle.  I have a SSBC disc brake conversion on their now and SSBC says it won't bolt to the spindles and can't just buy a different bracket.  So I am looking at going with the wilwood front 11" 4 piston brakes on front and rear.  Also going to go with double adjustable UCA because I just want to make sure there is enough adjustment for the caster being that I have heard so much about it being to be  more than typically what you can get.  I also going to go with PST 1.03 torrison bars and bilstein shocks along with poly graphite kit. Caps told me that I would better off going with a coil over conversion to lower because it would be more adjustable.  The cost he was saying was about 500 with the shocks and both control arms.  But I haven't heard to many good things about CAPs.  I am open for suggestions.  I have been trying to figure out the best options.  There is so many and brake prices are all over the board.

clears the tie rod by about 1/4",

If that is near the rim that's OK but if it's near the sidewall of the tire is is not. I'd say you need at least 3/4" for tire deflection.
I say this as on my C-Body spindle/brake project I to ended up with the tie rod about 1/4" from the sidewall of the tire. No way that would have worked. I added a spacer to get the 3/4" clearance.  I'm using 15" rims with 235/60 rubber. I would guess bigger rims with shorter sidewalls would deflect less but.....?

No, you can just turn down the t-bars, but you will also need to step up the t-bar size to avoid bottoming out the resulting short travel.

Hmm, that doesn't add up. If the SSBC kit was designed to fit the stock spindles, it should fit drop spindles as they are a copy of the stock design, just dropped 2". Bearing size, location, disc location, and bracket mounting points are all the same, just moved up. I think they may have that wrong.

Before jumping too deep in to what you need to buy, what are you planning on doing with the car? racing, if so what kind? what is the budget? how important are looks? how much "ahhh" factor do you need? Cap isn't right in that coil overs are the best way to lower the car, but they are right that coil overs are very adjustable. Do you need more adjustability than what you have with the stock configuration?

I know this is a little late, I'm not on here a ton anymore though. The 1/4" tie rod clearance is to the rim, with 17" rims the tie rod is on the inside of the rim. That's what allows you to run more backspace with the 17" rims than you can with the 15's. With non-dropped spindles you'd have even more clearance on the tie rod.

Gotcha! That should be no issue then!  :2thumbs:
