VDO upgraded tach
« on: January 08, 2011 - 11:32:35 AM »
My tach responds slow to rpm changes and bounces alot at WOT compared to a modern car. A friend of mine said it is possible to upgrade older tachs to modern specs and called the process a VDO upgrade.

Has anyone heard of this and is it really possible? I tried finding stuff out there on the Internet but the only reference to VDO was new replacement gauges.

I like the idea alot but I wonder if there are other electronic upgrades required within the car. I really don't want to install other junk under my dash or in my engine compartment just for this.

Any info is appreciated. Thanks

Never heard of a VDO upgrade.

RT Engineering does upgrades to modernize the tach. http://rt-eng.com/mediawiki/index.php/Main_Page

My buddy called it a "VDO upgrade" but maybe he was confused. At any rate, I am just looking to have my tach operate a bit more responsively like modern cars.

I checked the link and it looks pretty interesting. My biggest concern was that I would have to make other electrical upgrades which I didn't want to do. I was hoping to drop in the reworked tach and go.

I will read it more and see if they can help me. It looks like they do quite a bit.

Thanks for the info.

What other upgrades?  They do offer the 5V regulator to keep from smoking your gauges with +12V, but it's all piece-meal.

I am not sure what else would be needed in terms of an upgrade. I definitely am not an electronics person. I just figured with my typical luck that anything more modern would have some sort of catch. The tach movement of the original unit is pretty sucky so if it were easy to improve, why doesn't everyone do it? Maybe I am overthinking here. I do that alot.

I am gonna look into that company so thanks again for the info.

Factory tic toc tach and I improved the stock dist. with one of the Allison modules 20 yrs ago. Still using the original voltage reg, distributor, and other components. The Allison do-hicky has a pickup inside the distributor and has an additional module on the firewall that works with the existing system. I'd like to replace the Allison unit to a style that is completely hidden in the dist.
