Well my town broke a record for most snow fallen in 24 hours yesterday. 51.2 cm's of snow. That's just over half a meter of snow in 24 hours. It was carnage even for a Canadian City. 1/3 of our entire city's busses were marooned in the snow. I pushed 5 cars yesterday out of the road, 3 hours to commute home, shovelled for three hours BUT I'm not complaining.

I met some neighbours I had never seen before, we were all in the same situation and there wasn't f-all we could do about it so we enjoyed some beers in the snow till the plow allowed us to connect to civilisation again. I'm going to go skiing on Friday and keep on smiling. I will take winter over extreme heat any day!

I really do love living in Ottawa  :canada:

Send some my way please! :icon16: :money:

I obviously do not know what size of snow blower you are using but around me in Ontario there are always people selling used snow blowers. These engines are used only a few times a year and generally run for millennia. I bought a used snow blower for 50 Dollars because it had a flat tire. It's a 2 stage 10 horse unit with a 26 inch blower. An inner tube for the tire was 12 dollars.

People are way to quick to ditch small engines that start to run bad. My dad got a free snow blower because it needed a new carburetor. One trip to amazon and 36 dollars later he has a fully functional snow blower. His is a massive 32 inch unit and other then oil changes it has been chugging along for years.

I got my lawnmower for free since it had a snapped pull cord, 8 dollars at Home Depot and it's back and running. the Unit is only 5 years old.

So what I am saying here is check online if they are "broken" it's usually because people are morons.

Just this year I pulled a ~30 year old snow blower out of my aunts barn, rebuilt the carb and gave it to a friend who just bought a new house. The carb rebuild kit was ~8 dollars, a 4 dollar spark plug, some fuel line, oil and a can of paint. A new snow blower of this size and power would have been an easy 1200 dollars.

At the Farm we have a PTO mounted unit that came with our 54 or 64 Massey Ferguson 135 and it's a champ and I'm sure on the re-sale market it's worth peanuts too.

Can you tell me how to find these deals.  I never see them here the Cambridge end of Ontario.

I would love both a snow blower and a gas mower on the cheap.  As one might guess I am handy and pretty sure I could fix just about any mechanical issue.

I bought an $1,800 Giant Vac commercial leaf blower because the owner died after only using it twice and his kids let it sit in a shed for four years. It would only run with the choke full on because the gas had gummed up the carb so I offered $400 and they took it.

I opened up the carb and the jet was blocked. I stuck a needle through it and it runs like a top. $0 invested.

A lot from kijiji that's where I found my "broken" lawnmower, someone just looking to get it out of their garage.

Snowblowers are a bit harder to find but where I find them most is in the outlying areas were people typically put them in the barn/shed/garage and forget about them. They all suffer from improper storage especially with today's ethanol fuel. People gum up a carb, they have the idea it's going to cost more than a new blower to fix, see that there is a new one on sale at Canadian tire and a good blower goes to waste.

I took a quick look at Cambridge Kijiji:

MTD unit with a Tecumseh motor on it, a bit rough looking but running and working for 200 bucks? offer the guy 150 and there is no reason why it won't work for another 20 years. Paint it in the summer if your into looks. A new blower of this magnitude would be 800ish.

Here is one near me for sale:

This is the exact snow blower my dad had while I was growing up. The only reason he got rid of it was because I sucked up a tire chain without noticing it and ruined the impellor on the second stage and broke a couple of teeth off the gears. Why repair it when you can get another used unit for sub 200 dollars.

This is a hard time to find a deal on these things but in the spring and summer they generally go cheaper.

Hmmmm what is snow? :roflsmiley: I live in Calgary and this is one of the mildest winters I can remember. The trees have pussy willows on them and they are budding. I saw a fly 2 weeks ago, so very strange. I love this global warming stuff. Our 2 week long range forecast shows above average temps and only a slight chance of precipitation.  :clapping: I know we will pay for it down the road but I can wait. Cheers

Yikes! It was 20c here yesterday and looking like summer. Saying that, sold a 440 to a guy yesterday who drove down 7 hrs south to me and he says he still has 3 ft of snow in his backyard.
