I woke up to snow on the ground yesterday morning. Not much ,just covered the grass. It was all melted in a couple of hours when the sun came up.
What really rots my socks about that was the wife and I had made bet in the beginning of March that it wouldn't snow again enough to accumulate. The looser gets to give a back massage......My fingers/hands are sore this morning! :grinyes:

"usraptr" = United States raptor - bird of prey = United States Bald Eagle.  FYI, somebody else thought of it first so I had to drop the "O" in raptor.

Woke up to two inch's this morning.
70 and sunny on Sunday, 32 degrees and snow two days later.

Figures, My car is in the shop and I am supposed to pick it up today.
I won't drive it in the weather so it sits.  Makes me nervous with something in the shop.

I saw lots of snow yesterday while driving back home from Moses Lake, Wa to Olympia, Wa.  Pictures are from the summit (and Ski area) of White Pass near Mt Rainier.  Some snow fell the night before but the roads were bare.

It's a little deceptive.  The western mountains get a LOT of snow over the winter - often more than 300" a year at some resorts.  In order to keep the parking lots and roads clear, they use truck mounted snow blowers that throw the snow up more than away, so you get really deep drifts next to the road, but it often slopes down behind the peak.  Not to say there isn't a lot of snow - there is.  Just not the 5'-12' it looks like in the pictures.  The roof of the lodge gives you a better idea of what's on the ground.

I'm no expert on mountain snow and don't dispute the above quote but the snow on the roof evidently is not an accurate gauge of snow on the ground.  It snows so much they remove snow from roof tops to prevent collapse.  I just looked at the on the ground measurements on a web-site and as of today they list: Mt. Baker ski area with 254 inches,Snoqualmie with 128 inches and White Pass (where I took the pictures) at 222 inches.  But I may be wrong--again.

No, you aren't wrong, but it's also difficult to go with what the ski report says, since that's an average depth including depths at the top of the mountain, which are not necessarily indicative of what's at lower elevations.  While I'm not a skier, I used to drive bus loads of them up to Mammoth Mountain in the Sierra Nevada several times a year for about 10 years.  Mammoth averages over 350" per year and often reports depths of 180" (think about it - 15 feet of snow!) for it's snowpack.  In a good year, they'll stay open until Fourth of July.  But at the lodge, the depth on the ground was usually quite a bit less.  I suspect the depth on the ground in the White Pass picture is probably about 6-7 feet at the lodge.

One of my coworkers grew up in Minnesota and has done over 300 trips to Mammoth and other California ski resorts.  He once told his family back home that he didn't know what real deep snow was until he moved to California and started driving to the Sierras.   :ylsuper:  I did a little research, though, and found that your Mt Baker typically gets more snow than any other ski resort in the world - over 500" a year on average.  And in the 1998-99, they recorded 1,140 inches - almost 95 FEET!!! of snow.   :eek2:  http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22150492/ns/travel-seasonal_travel/t/top-snowiest-ski-resorts-world/#.T35_LvBumSo

:wow:   Funny I always assumed that us up here in Canada got more snow than the USA ( not including Alaska of cource) and for sure I never would have thought about CA!  It's always good to learn new stuff!  :2thumbs: I've seen a few pictures but always thought they were photoshopped or something. Maybe not! :faint:

It's funny, but just because Canada is above the USA doesn't mean that the elevations are greater than the USA.. Even the difference in F to C isnt extreme in actual temps.  We see zero and -20 alot down here in areas  and 6-10 k above sea level.

So in Laymans terms, our ant nests are as high as yours, and our cold will freeze you just as solid.  But the whole world here lately has had record temps affecting everyone.

Y'know how the areas on the eastern shores of the Great Lakes always have heavier snow because of the "lake effect?"  Well, over here on the West Coast, we have this really big lake.  Perhaps you've heard of it - the Pacific Ocean?   :poopoke:   :roflsmiley:

Seriously - the storms roll of the Pacific and hit the 10,000+ foot mountains of the Sierras and the Cascades and the mountains just squeeze the moisture out of the clouds like water from a sponge.  And because the storms are coming across the water, they're full of moisture - the air is relatively warm because the ocean keeps the air temperatures up and warm air holds more water.  That's why our winter time temps are rarely below freezing on the West Coast, at least not until you start going up in elevation.

The East Coast  and Midwest don't get near as much snow annually because the majority of storms are coming down from northern Canada, where the air is much colder and can't hold as much moisture.  That same cold dry air coming south this time of year meets the warm moist air coming up from the Caribbean to create tornadoes.  That's why we don't get tornadoes here, just the occasional water spout.

End of meteorology lesson.

i live in minnesota now[st paul] and i didn't even shovel once this year.around january -feburary of last year i couldn't even shovel anymore because my arms and back ached so much from shoveling and plus had nowhere to put the snow.sure didn't miss it this year, lol  :woohoo:
