    Questions about a few leaks

    here are a few pictures of my last couple small drips Im trying to eliminate. They dont drip often, but theyre aggravating.
    Any advice?

    My guess is valve covers. If it is primarily ay the back, dont forget to chk the oil pressure sending unit. Just had one fail on me and it was leaking oil everywhere.

    the hads are never cast or machined flat , steel covers were used so they could conform to the uneven surface of the head , cast covers are very hard to seal as the will not flex to conform to the head ,

    YuP,Valve covers. We used the rubber gaskets with "right stuff". And used little spring clamps to hold them in place on the cover over night. Then another bead around the head,and install. Not a drip.  Might want to do that fuel pump block off too just because. And the oil pressure is another good place to seal threads.

    removed the blue silicone "moroso" gasket which had a couple cuts in it and just put one good bead of right stuff on the valve cover...first cleaned the surfaces up with brake cleaner, which is the hardest and messiest part of the job, tightned the cover down down, and so far no leaks.
    Right stuff is expensive, but if it works, AND it can replace the gasket, its worth every penny.

    I'm thinking the only problem is later, when I have to clean and scrape it all off  :clueless:

    while here I thought I'd toss in a few more pictures.
    Any comments about my bottom end?
    I do see a little scuffing on a cylinder wall but I guess its normal?
    and my dipstick only protrudes about an inch. Hope thats ok? Guess it depends on where the marks are. I'll check that, but should oil fill the pan to the top?

    I can see that it was rebuilt and they added the double roller chain.

    Did they balance the engine at that time? The connecting rod tabs on the caps look like they were not touched but the crank counterweights looks like they were.

    Did the engine have a windage tray in it? If it was a true SIX PACK engine, it shoulda came with the tray and the double roller chain stock. If not, now is the time to add one for a few extra ponies....I can't tell if they are SP rods or not from the pick as I would need to see them from the side..The rods may or may not have had to be touched when balancing the bottom end.I've seen where the material was removed from the bottoms of the pistons instead..

    Interesting about taking it off the pistons. And I didnt know that they put double rollers in the six pack motors. I learn stuff in here everyday!

    Its not a true six pack engine, but kinda a mongrel put together by the prior owner 4000 miles and 7 years ago.

    ENGINE BLOCK - '74 440 HP
    + .030 Bore - stock 3.75 stroke (446ci)
    Stock cast crank and stock LY rods
    TRW forged flat tops, Federal bearings, stock       replacement rings
    CARBS - Factory '70 six pack 4sp vacuum, jetted and tuned
    INTAKE - Factory '70 iron 6bbl that was port matched
    HEADS - '66 516 casting closed chamber
    Heads have 2.08/1.74 stainless performance valves, pocket ported and cleaned
    245cfm @.550 intake / 175cfm @ .550 exhaust
    Final compression of 10.5:1
    CAM - Crane hydraulic H-302-2, 302°, .504 lift, 232° @ .050 intake, 312°, .528 lift, 242° @ .050 exhaust

    You can see where the bottom of the rods were ground down to remove weight.

    Tommy,
      If you leave the motor tie down chain where it is it most likely won't work.  It is good at the frame.  The hole you have it mounted in on the block won't handle the impact if your mount breaks.  The boss in the block will break.  I would suggest moving the chain to the block motor mount boss.  Bolt it on with a motor mount bolt.  You will need to get a longer grade 8 bolt to do this.

    the full level should be below the crank counter weights , basically to the bottom of the windage tray , your dipstick looks too short to me .
     Light scuffing is normal in the cylinders , scoring is not . probably got too warm at some point
     I use a steel strap across the mount to secure it instead of a chain , that way there is no windup before it hits the end of the chain
