How To: Rear End/Diff Removal?
« on: January 18, 2011 - 11:21:17 PM »

Hey guys, I'm removing the 8-3/4" out of a 70 Challenger and installing a Dana 60 in it's place. What are the steps for removing the entire read end housing? Jack it up, jackstands, remove leaf springs, brakelines, driveshaft, shocks, then drop? Just a matter of undoing everything or is there a special way/technique to doing this? Anything to watch out for or be careful of? TIA

Dont forget the e-brake cables. Clean and lube all your u-bolt threads well before you wrench on them, it'll save a lot of time and elbow grease.  I would replace your leaf spring bushings while you're at it. Sounds like you pretty much have it down. Are you re-using your brakes?

Thanks Mike, good point on the threads, will DW40 them. The car is only 5 years out of resto so thankfully it's not a 40 year old set of bolts and threads I'm dealing with lol. Um, nope, they are currently drums, the Dana has discs already attached. It's a custom Dr Diff piece, unused.

I would sugest removing the rear valance, if you are going to drop the leafs.  If your bushings are fine, you can get one or two buddies to help and take the rear out sideways through the wheel well opening.  You can put the Dana in the same way.

I wanted to add.  You don't have to drop the leafs when you take the rear out through the wheel well.  You don't have to drop the valance when you take the rear out through the wheel well.  You do have to drop the valance when you drop the leafs at the rear shackles.

:iagree:
That would be my preferred route. Just remove the e-brake, brake hose and u-bolts then move it out the wheel well. Two man operation though. One man can do it with the leafs dropped.  :2cents:

Thanks Kurt, looking good their buddy.

Not at all, it's Dr Diff piece and off the top of my head was around $2,250 all up?? Shipping for me was KILLER, probably around the same as the actual diff LOL. worth it though. I need it too.

Just the factory floor system? The vehicle will still remain very stock appearing, in fact, only you buggers will probably know what's changed lol. Love the OEM look, with maybe the addition of meaty tires and a good ride height but that's all. Can't wait!!
