What's it doing? Has it started to unscrew and then stopped? or simply won't unscrew at all?


Simply won't unscrew at all... I can screw and screw, even not pull it off, but I think I pulled the whole rod. I grabbed the rod that goes down at the end, and hold it with a pincer. Nothing. Now the end of the rod is bent and the trigger won't trigger right. :shock: The metal knob seems to be rusted to the rod. So I will not try it again and will remove it with a dremel.

Somebody knows if this trigger button is stock? I can't get it off and will destroy it.

No it's not stock, looks like it's metal and starting to rust? Further down the knob there should be a set screw. It should just pull off then you remove that set screw?

Wow ... guess I will have to go for it...

try out their shifters at Carlisle ...

I tried both trigger styles and the most comfortable was the Gunslinger
I like the looks of the Auto better esp the cant of the grip.
as much as the push-down style looks "more real" I just don't like to push down to shift.

Who here has the auto with the boot that looked like a 4-speed (that was pretty good looking in person)

Yes, it's metal and yes I completely removed the allen set screw. I've set a screwdriver under the metal until it bent the screwdriver. It must be screwed not just pushed and my guess the thread rusted together with the metal knob. I will use a dremel to remove it...

Furthermore I think they glued it to the threaded rod. And there is not the right spring under the metal trigger. Let's see once I have it off.

Time for some vise grips maybe? It's not stock so who cares really if you wreck it. I'm guessing they made a hole under it just the right size or smaller than the shifter needs and just hammered it on.

Yeah, finally I got some advise today from quapman how to remove the whole center shaft. My thoughts are now:
When removing the small cross pin near the bottom of the shaft it should be possible to pull out the center shaft with my unremovable metal trigger button. Then I can take a closer look, what is wrong with it and I can even remove the shifter plate and woodgrain knob, which is still on and disturbs me.

And yes, then I will wreck it and wait for the Auto-Grip.  :bananasmi

Will take a short look right now.

I'm writing this here, cause maybe one day someone needs the information too.

Hi peeps,

mystery solved. Finally.

I removed the rubber (not plastic) insert (where the upper rod connects), found the cross pin, removed it and I'm happy now. Nothing is wrecked, the self-made button was glued and I could remove it easy when the rod was out.

The attachment shows the rod which is bent, but not down at the end, as I guessed first, but on the top. I think it should be straight, isn't it?
I hope they did not shorten the rod.

Any ideas out there? I have to straighten it, right?

Latecomer to this thread.  You can straighten this rod by putting it in a vise, squeeze, loosen, rotate a little, repeat...

Biggest thing I recommend here is BE&A  parts has the chrome bezel with lense, and the black plastic slider for the gear indicator.

It looks like on some of the consoles there is a thin piece of cork or rope caulk on top of the shifter bezel and underneath the console woodgrain top plate.
I scraped off some black sticky stuff which was under the top plate on mine but I don't know what to replace it with.

Does anyone know what I should use or does anyone care?  :blah:

Old thread, I know, but I found it and really liked some ideas in here, so I did the same with my 72 road runner. Ordered from resto rick, and the sleeve didnt fit. It was too tight, and wouldnt slide up and down, so after "modifying" it I worked around that, and then found the road runner 4 speed rubber boot wouldnt work. Its not flexible enough, so after looking carefully at Brads picture, I realized that isnt a road runner boot. I believe its from a 2000-2004 jeep, so I ordered one for $24 and it works really well. Im really happy with it. Thanks  to all for all the great ideas.
