    Need some help with engine mounts

    Sp I finally got around to replacing my driver side motor mount.....after all the himhawwing I went thru it went easier than I feared.....the old mount was totally separated....while I was under there I decided i should change the other side too....so I have the drivers side back together loosely and plan on starting the other side...

    I found that the previous "installer" used all sorts of mismatched bolts......in particular, the 4" bolt that connects the mount to the frame. So went out and got some grade 8, 7/16" - 14 thread 4" bolts.

    That will at least be a huge improvement....

    But.....curious about if I am missing parts.....

    There is a nut side and a hole side to the new mount just like the old...same size and everything....but the hole is a good bit larger than the bolt diameter...



    Is there supposedto be a spacer or somethin there? 

    Also, noticed that the space between the "ears" on the new mount are wider than the width of where it bolts to the frame, so there is a gap on one side......is that a problem or normal?

    Should I just fill the gap with washers? 

    Seems like between the hole being large and that gap, there would be movement???

    normal, but put a washer on the bolt, keep it tight

    The gap should close up when you tighten the bolt. The steel from which the ears are made of is quite flimsy and will bend when you tighten it.

    Also, don't foget the torque strap to keep the new mounts together...

    How big is the gap?  If you have a 318 mount on a 340-360 block it will have a 1/2" gap or so, I used a grade 8 nut to fill it perfectly.

    I am glad I did this.

    The four bolts on the left side were also undersized....

    will have to get some new bolts this week....autozone doesnt carry the right sized grade 8 bolts.

    I will say that the passenger side mount seems way easier to do...

    The gap I meant was on the frame-to-mount part....i think you are talking about the mount-t0-block part, right?

    I have a gap on the drivers side mount-to-block.....the two front ears on the block are about a half inch away from the mount so I used nuts in there....but my block is definately a 318.....so could I have the oppositie of what you said....in other words its a 340-360 mount on a 318 block?

    The passenger side fits perfect.

    I goofed and forgot about that gap so the new bolts I got wouldnt work.....so I reused what was there...on that side the bolts were much more stout......

    So for all intents and purposes the mounts are done.

    I think the motor sits up a smidge higher now and is more level when I look at it now.

    Yes mount to block from me.

    I'd guess it sits higher from the new/firmer mounts.  Glad it worked out for you. :2thumbs:

    While your around the mounts anyway, you might want to go CP route and use a piece of 1" x 1/16" (I think) steel to bridge the rubber isolator. Not as obvious in the engine compartment as the chain.

    I got one mag mount to put in some day, so far the torque strap and stock mounts are holding up fine.
