Question regarding torque straps

I have a mildly built 383 w/727 auto and  it has new rubber engine mounts.  I'm not going to race it, but just "get on it" every now and then.

Do you think I would need a torque strap or should the regular motor mounts be sufficient to hold up?

I raced my 383 Roadrunner back in the 70's and never needed a strap.  I replaced the motor mount insulators when I 'built' the 383 and then raced it for the next 3-4 years and never had an issue with the mounts.  I obviously got on it plenty during that time.

I turned a little 318 on its side one time after coming out of dirt and hitting dry pavement. I don't think it would hurt to have one.  :2cents:

If you've ever replaced a driver's side motor mount or had one break at the most inopertune time, you'll run a torque chain from now on...ESPECIALLY, with a 4-speed..

1/4" X 1" aluminum stock , cut to fit , heat up the lower end and twist, two bolts , drill holes and your done.. 30 minutes & $6.00....

Schmacher makes motor mounts that have locking metal plates inserted in the rubber. Rubber allows for the vibrations and flex but the plates wont allow it past a certain point. They claim is is unbreakable. And they look stock. Something to consider if you didn't want the torque strap look.

I had those on my 440.

The drivers side still broke.

I ended up with a used Schumaker torque strap bought from a club member which looks pretty cool.
That is still on the car and works well. Does not transmit much in the way of vibration either due to the way it mounts as there is anough flex to let the engine move a little.

One more request.  Does any one have pictures of what their torque chain looks like and also the specs( length,size of chain links etc.

Not to hijack the link but how did the schmaker unit break? The cutaway shows two interlocking slabs of metal surrounded by rubber.

Did the metal shear off or bend apart? Are you running super high output?

I'm kinda shocked and since I have those mounts, now I'm a little worried. I don't need the air cleaner smashing my ramcharger airbox I just finished.

I am going to try the late 80s van mounts, they have restrictor plates built in.
won't alow it to stretch.
Can't hurt to see how they fit.

Maybe they changed the design since.
On the ones I bought way back when they had two tapered pins in the rubber that locked as the mount tried to pull apart. The pins just snapped. I was making about 520hp at that time.

Idea #2 didn't last long either. I used a tube that was not strong enough.
