if you are starting from scratch your not that far off if you use quality parts - some holley's are over a grand ya know. the EZ system is on ebay for 1300

Yeah, but there ain't no used Fuel injection set ups at the local swap meet that i can buy for $100.00 and put a bout a $50.00 kit in and be ridin in 20 min...

From experience I tuned an EFI system with an agressive 680 lift solid roller cam , race heads & 2" headers , we bypassed the Map sensor below 1500 RPM & were able to tune the idle circuit in si it idles like a stock engine , does not load up , above 1500 RPM it goes to closed loop & runs off the Map & O2 sensors , we tuned it to 710 GHP / around 420 at the tires on a Mustang Dyno which is the lowest reading dyno , the car runs 11.90 s on street tires at 4000 ' altitude & is 100 % street drivable / friendly . The Only downside is the cost or i would have the system on my Charger already !

I see no mention of megasquirt here. I swapped a 5.9 magnum with a carb in years ago, but its FI intake under my workbench called out to me when gas hit 4.00 a gallon a couple years ago. I was able to put fuel injection with a megasquirt computer on my car for about $600.00, and if I did the same swap over again, I could easily knock 100.00 maybe 200.00 off of that. I already had the intake, injectors and a lot of the other small parts needed. Megasquirt takes a lot of time to tune, but is worth it and has lots of options, like rev limiter, launch control, different fuel tables for nitrous etc, oh yeah, and my mileage went from 11mpg to about 16mpg

because the people who went fuel injection are selling the old carbs at the swap meet!

I knew about Megasquirt, and have had buddies that have run it, but like you, they already had most of the components..A BB set up will be a challenge, but I think it can be done and won't require all kinds of lap tops and software to get it to run..Maybe if I look deeper into the Megasquirt computer, that might be the way for me to go...
