Hood Insert Stripped
« on: January 24, 2011 - 11:38:02 PM »
One of the threaded holes in my scoop is stripped and the insert consistently works itself loose.  I thought about using the thread-riveter on it, but am hoping for other options, first.

What's a thread riveter?

Why wouldn't a helicoil work in that situation? Or is the insert your talking about a helicoil which is no longer staying put?

A thread riveter, or thread setter, allows you to crimp a threaded insert into thin or sheet material (metal, plastic, etc.).  Sizes vary up to 5/16", based on the model you purchase.  I bought a Marson on eBay for about $60 and I've used it hundreds of times in the last 6 years.

I hadn't thought about heli-coil...worth a shot!

What about using loctite and a stud , instead of a bolt? Red loctite is permanent.
Can it be drilled and tapped a little deeper to get some more good thread engagement first?

those inserts are aluminium right?   why don`t you weld up the hole and drill a new one?

I think these vary somewhat by year-to-year.  The black insert is held to the body-colored scoop by two screws.  The scoop itself is already painted, so I have concerns about welding discoloring the paint.  I think I'm going to try the helicoil first and see where that puts me.

Anyone got a picture of the 'Cuda scoop itself, without the insert attached?  Might simplify this conversation somewhat.

I had the exact same problem. I ended up removing the scoop from the hood and putting a nut on the backside. The threads are actually inside a rubber housing. The rubber eventually rots and breaks off with the thread in it. The pic of the left scoop is a good thread mount, the right one shows one broke off.

John, your 70 should have inserts with studs.  The 70 scoops just have holes in them.  :2thumbs:

:clueless:   ot sure if we mean the same thing here...

here`s a pic of a 70 scoop. It has holes with no thread in them. The inserts have studs on them and are helt in place with speednuts. sorry for the off-topic.

Later 71-74 scoop.  The through holes are for the locating pins.  The threaded holes are where screws go through the insert and into the scoop body, holding the insert in place.  The later inserts can be removed with the scoop still on the car.

Yes Bart. I have a '71 & up hood on the car. I realized it was wrong after looking at yours in your resto thread. There was a correct '70 hood with correct scoops for sale at last years Nat's but I had no way of getting it home.

Like a well nut? :dunno:

Well, I pulled the trigger on Brad's well nut suggestion and they look bang on. They slip right into the exsisting scoop's hole and with a little pressure on the insert you can thread the screw in easily. Unfortunately, I had to buy in bulk, maybe some specialty "nut & bolt" place sells them separately.
PIC#1 - Well nut.

PIC#2 - New one installed on my spare scoop.

PIC3# - Original dry rotted and cracked one.
