TF727 + Hemi Stall Converter Help
« on: January 25, 2011 - 08:07:08 PM »

I am having my TF727 built (performance/stout build) in New Zealand. We are finding it hard tracking down a torque converter that will handle the 660hp AND at the optimum rpm stall range we require. The ideal stall speed for the Hemi is 2,200-2,500rpm. The only converter we can find suitable rated to 650hp is 3,000-3,400rpm. It's "usable" but yeah, not ideal. The only converters we can find for the rpm we want are rated for like 400-450hp. Any ideas on who makes converters that we require? Surely there has to be someone out there. I would have thought 632lbs-ft and 660hp in terms of MoPars is a fairly "small" hp figure.

Thanks in advance for any help!!

Cheers,
Carl

When I got mine, I went to a specialty racing tranny type shop and had them build me one. I gave them all the specs on my car and we talked about what I wanted. They went to work and I really like the way it performs. Price was pretty fair too.

My setup is around 450 HP but I'd think they can custom build anything you want. I don't think your asking for too much.

Were you trying to find something off the shelf?

Thanks mate, have thought of the custom route. If possible, off the shelf would be the absolute best route for me. I've seen custom converters go from $900-$1,500+ USD :eek7: Seems somewhat overkill. Off the shelf converters go from $300-$600. For an all out track car, a custom is the only way to go but as you say, I don't think I'm asking a hell of lot and in todays world, 660hp isn't "that" much (especially for old BB/Hemi muscle cars). :-\ I appreciate your input!

Karl, take this advice for what you paid for it...An engine making 660 HP is NOT gonna be happy with a stall speed of 2200-2500 RPM IMO....

I'm thinking you will need at least a 3000 RPM stall speed to get a camshaft of that size to work...That's ALOT of engine, and your "Ideal" stall speed sounds like it may be for a stock Hemi, instead of a modified one...This is why you are having a hard time finding a converter..Nobody offers it as it isn't "Correct" for that kind of power output...

Thanks mate! But, this is from the engine builders mouth as well as several others. It's a 540 so is almost "detuned" and not working hard at all. Lots of torque down low, redline around 5,800rpm (limiter @ 6,200rpm) so it's not a high reving like a lot of Hemis. This doesn't need to rev high to make power, many need to rev. Ideally the stall we require is 2,500rpm on the dot. 3,000 MAX.

Wow, I didn't realize prices had gone up so much. I remember paying around 400-500 dollars for my 3000 stall unit but it has been around 10 years.

You can usually have a better piece built for the same price you would pay for an off the shelf piece.  Plus they can be rebuild-able in the case you want more power in the future.

Thanks everyone for your input! :2thumbs: Looks like I will go with what my transmission guy first said and as well as who Tim Banning uses and most of his Hemi customers use, TCS. I'll get in contact with TCS and get a custom converter priced up. I just thought surely some company would make an off the shelf converter to suit a TF727 for up to 700hp. No worries though, can't do much if no one makes it other than, custom make one.

Hey Carl. I see that you are discovering that there are many opinions about what converter would be the best.  For the record, I am running a Continental Custom converter in my High HP Hemi. It is great. I simply cannot tell it is a stall at all while driving it on the street. Also, it absolutely does not heat up the tranny while street driving. It is 3800 stall. Not a great dragstrip converter, but it flashes well. Not the perfect street converter as it does have a higher than stock stall. But it is a perfect blend of both worlds.  Just my 0.02....    :2thumbs:
