How about a poll on your favorite brand of muffler?
« on: January 25, 2011 - 09:41:03 PM »
We've all heard cars that just sound better than others.  Whats inside the engine, how much air its moving makes a difference to be sure, but some mufflers just sound better than others to my ears.  So I was wondering if there's any kind of consensus here about what the best sounding mufflers are for our Mopars?  Does it matter what size engines or what other engine mods such as headers are also on the car?  I'd love it if there was some way folks here could post .wav files or videos of there cars here where we could hear what a particular brand of muffler, headers, etc. sounds like on your cars.  I've listened to a bunch on Youtube, but those are mostly static, not what the cars sound like ripping down the road, etc.  So how about it, what is your favorite muffler and why?

Flowmaster 40's if you want a classic Mopar muscle sound.  Flowmaster 50's to get a great sound at a bit more livable db level  :burnout:

:2cents:  Mopars and Flowmasters are like chocoate and peanutbutter.............it don't get any better. Now for some reason (but I suspect it has to do with exaust flow) I think a small block Mopar does not fully aquire that "Flowmaster" sound. But boy oh boy, a big block just brings out the best sound going with Flowmaster mufflers.  :2thumbs:

I have a self built at home by me 3-1/2" exhaust with 40 Series Flowbastards under my Charger with an X-pipe reduced down to 3" after the mufflers , up over the axle out the back thru stock tips. I think it sounds awesome.  My brother & I can never believe how many people comment on how good it sounds but yet looks all stock. X-Pipe cancels so of the sound for sure. No-one beleives a custom exhaust shop didn't do the work.

I am running the Flowmaster 40's on the '69 and I love the way they sound. Mellow tone at idle and cruising, but boy do they start talking when I get in the throttle.....    :burnout:    :2thumbs:

Always been partial to Magnaflow.  Good sound without the drone of Flowmasters.  :2thumbs:

Nothing close to a consensus, but definitely two main camps between the Magnaflows & Flowmasters so far.  We could almost have a whole new thread on x pipes yes or no.  For that classic 70's stacato sound I wasn't going to put one on the Roadrunner because I always liked how the exhaust popped back & forth between the two tips and don't want to mute that.  I know the x pipes are supposed to be good for HP but right now I'm talking tone.  Was pretty much set on going with Flowmasters myself, but guess I'm going to have to check out Magnaflows too before I decide.

Best sounding muffler I ever had on the RR was a couple of round 'Scotty' mufflers.  They weren't glasspacks exactly as you couldn't see all the way through them as you could the cherry bombs and Thrush mufflers back then.  They were louder than stock but had just a deep mellow tone.  #^%&*@! Griffin GA policeman gave me a ticket for illegal mufflers right after I put them on.  Said they were glasspacks.  When I offered to take one off right then and show him they weren't he said it didn't matter they were the wrong shape anyway!  So I spent another $100 or so getting two loud as hell 'turbo' mufflers that looked stock but were way louder and didn't sound nearly as good, got pulled over by the policeman again a few weeks later and the thing was rocking downtown but he looked under the car saw the oval mufflers and said OK and drove off.  I can't type what I was saying to myself as I drove off, but I was I pissed at the stupidity of it all.
