Original type alternator for a 71 440?
« on: January 27, 2011 - 10:08:37 PM »
In my constant pursuit of trying to improve my tribute to the 71 440-6, I have been upgrading under the hood, and since my starter quit on me recently, I decided to also replace my anemic alternator.
Here are pictures of my new 75 amp rated Mancini Racing alternator, which I figured would be a direct replacement, and hopefully put out more amps than the one I replaced. The test tag that was attached to it states 69a output at idle, and 96a at "highway speed".

I have two questions for anyone that can help.
First, what type alternator came with the 71 440? Any pictures?
I only have pictures of an award winning 70 440 and it looks like my old alternator with the center bands.
Second, looking closely in the rear square, one of the six contacts? if thats what they are, looks like it broke off and is missing. What are they? And one of those on the new alternator looks like it is slightly twisted. Hopefully that wont be a problem?
Thanks again for any suggestions.

Square backs were the later version. I think from 72' up.

For a 71 model year car (built from 08-70 until 06-71) you should have a "round back" alternator. For a hemi application it should be either a 3438176 (37 amp) or a 3438177 (50 amp). The pulley on that alternator should have the part number 2095059 stamped into the hub face. The assembly date is what your looking for as far as date code (DC) and it should be a three or four digit numeral stamped into the alternator directly above the output stud. Usually the alternator DC will predate your cars SPD by a couple of weeks to 6 months prior. It is not necessarily related to the engine DCing.

Here's a 71' version correctly restored.

ugggh,
wish I had done a little more homework, but...
its not like I'm going to be scored on originality anyways. It is a tribute after all, and its the thought that counts, right?
Besides, with an electric fuel pump, a/c, power windows, etc etc I NEED more than 60 amps.
Thanks for the input.

restoring was an option I considered by a shop here in Miami coincidentally called Dixie Auto, but I just figured I might as well replace it with one rated at 75 amps, especially since the guy said he might not be able to get 75 amps out of the old one.
Besides, mine doesnt have any date stamp that I can read anyway, so I dont think it has any value in that sense.
If the "real" alternators are only rated at 60, I think I made the right decision.
I learned some more about my car, and thats good, but originality, which comes with costs (in my case of impracticality) would be a little on the overboard side for a tribute car.

Still curious... what are those 6 contact type things inside the square?

Believe those are Diodes.

I always believed the Square back was correct for 71 ? Maybe it was a mid year change
the Diodes are viable from the rear , the wire should not be disconnected , the Powermaster one of my customers got lasted about 2 hrs before it failed , I no longer use powermaster parts

wow,
wish I had upgraded a year ago. This alternator works!
Now I have my old core which still looks great, and looks more original, so I may just upgrade it with the 75 amp kit thats available
